has anyone tried to use UPS to mail a package? And if so, the cost vs. the post office?

I've had so many problems with USPS in teh last several months... it sucks. Luckily, no problems with lost mail (knock on wood) but, plenty with slow mail and damaged items. It seems like everything I've sent or received for teh last 6 mos or so through USPS has arrived with at minimum the packaging damaged. In some cases, the item itslef was damaged too. Rediculous.Since when did USPS purchase a herd of elephants to sit on and drag around every item that works its way through their sorting areas? I'm pretty fed up and am thinking of using UPS for the shipping of anything beyond basica carrier mail. It costs a little more but, if the items arrive uninjured, it's worth it.

I'm surprised by that. I ship and receive everything by USPS Priority and 99.9% of the time everything arrives in great shape. And usually within a few days. UPS is generally a little more expensive to ship, especially going international. UPS international rates are crazy high, because they don't have a "normal" delivery option, everything is express.

Yikes.

Sometimes I think you're better off sending items without writing "fragile" on them. It's almost like putting a bullseye on certain packages for certain drivers  :P

The sad state of affairs is, when I know something is coming USPS, that is the best case scenario I expect to get the package in.
