I played the trumpet from 2nd grade to the end of high school. I ranked 1st in the state of Illinois of all high school students, got offered a couple small scholarships, but turned those down because I was sick of playing the trumpet. I haven't tooted a note in it since 1991.

i want to take up trumpet, Dustrho, do you think it's even worth it?  i mean, i know the mechanics of playing a brass instrument, i know basic music theory (i'm studying music production) and i know i need to develop my embouchure, but i'm 32 years old.  i saw on a musicians' forum someone in her mid-20s wanted to take up viola cold and everyone told her she was too old, yes, too old to begin the training; that it's better to learn an instrument like that when you're young.

i'm curious, what's your 411?

I'd say it's never to late to learn a instrument. I didn't learn drums till I was 13yrs so no matter what age you are, anyone can learn a instrument at any age.

I play bass guitar (obviously from my avatar) and program a drum machine. It's not as easy as you might think.
My opinion is just that, MY opinion. If you don't like it, just ignore it.

Don't take any time for granted. If you want to learn anything, whether it be a new language, cook your favorite food, or even play an instrument, do it. Then you will not have any regrets of woulda coulda shoulda.

Not as funny as you being the opening act for Willie Nelson in Austin Texas! All kidding aside I do admire anyone who can play as I attempted a couple different instruments growing up (other than the skin flute) and found it to be not my cup of tea. My brother on the other hand can play quite a few different things, but really enjoys the guitar.

I play electric guitar as well. I took lessons in late 2000 and recently stopped. I'm taking a sabbat(h)ical and will continue the lessons next season. I have so much info from my teacher, I want to take my time and really dig through that.

The great thing about my teacher is that he managed to widen my musical horizon immensely. My roots (no pun intended) stick with the likes of Sepulturea, Metallica, Fear Factory, Machine Head, but man, did I learn to appreciate blues, funk and good ol' 70s rock!

I don't play in a band, simply because of not wanting to take on even more commitments. I just play for myself and friends and for the fun of it. I have a USA Strat and a Yamaha SA2000. The latter one is excellent for some groovy slide guitar playing.

Last week I doodled a bit of From This Day by Machine Head and accidentally stumbled on the riff of Wilma's Rainbow by Helmet. Things like this are pretty funny!

I've done the same thing with my guitar as well. I love some sepultura as bro. Great band but its a shame that the oldest brother the singer left in 97' I think.

The great thing about my teacher is that he managed to widen my musical horizon immensely.

Yeah, they can do that for you, no doubt. When I started taking lessons back in 1986, all I wanted to learn was Ozzy and Metallica songs. But he opened my ears to a lot of other music, and I actually started learning to play classical nylon string guitar at that point. I was learning suites from Back and Mozart translated to the guitar, and I could actually hear songs and passages by Randy Rhoads (R.I.P.) and Yngwie Malmsteen in them. That got me hooked and I learned classical for the next several years, and learned to appreciate much more than rock/metal.

Of course, he also showed me the roots of other styles like jazz, funk, rock and metal, and the basics like scales and chord progressions. I learned how to get the sounds I wanted, many different sounds out of the same guitar/amp. I would play a Hendrix song with a nice fat funk sound and then adjust pickups and tweak settings to get that screaming metal Judas Priest sound 2 minutes later.

Yep, Max left in '97 after a dispute between the other band members and Sep's manager, who happened to be Max's wife  :-\ Max formed Soulfly and Sepultura struggled further without him. However, Max and his brother Iggor got back together last year and formed Cavalera Conspiracy and released Inflikted this year. Saw 'em live in Amsterdam earlier this year, and did they mop the floor with the joint! Lots and lots of Sep songs and in-your-face brutality from the Inlikted album. And Marc Rizzzo on guitar, incredible  :partyon:

Here are some shots I took from that show.

Holy shlitz!, I love his drumset and glad you spreaded the info on the band since I hadn't heard much from them. I STILL am VERY eager to here SOMETHING from the band "Anthrax". I would really like to hear what or if they plan on releasing a CD soon since they are my favorite. I know the new singer sounds sort of like John bush, so we will see. I really don't think the new singer of Anthrax will stick around for very long.

Nothing wrong in playing Trombone at all. In fact, alot of musicians played that or something else before the instrument they play now.

Isnt it amazing how timeless elvis is? some things are just great forever-star wars ,elvis, even Motown music and in my opinion Michael jackson fits too.
