Display Risers
« on: February 25, 2007, 10:33:02 PM »
Recently, I made some display risers using foam core, and was asked how I made them.  Below is a tutorial on how exactly I did mine.  They were relatively simple to do, and there aren't any frills in them at all.  However, it greatly expanded my display area to set them out neatly so as not to look jumbled.

Materials needed:
Foam core board
Xacto knife
Glue (Aileens works the best)
Pencil
Ruler (who doesn't own a ruler, right Dan? ;))

The first step is to cut out the risers.  For loose figures, I made them 5 steps high, 1.5" deep, and 1" high each, for a 7.5" x 5" rectangle.  For the Bust-Ups and Titanium ships, I made them 3 steps high, 3" deep x 2"tall each, for a 6" high x 9" deep rectangle.  I drew out the grid lines with the pencil and ruler and VERY CAREFULLY cut along those lines with the Xacto blade.

The next step is to cut out strips, as long as you want them.  I made mine 12" long and as deep as the riser, so for my loose figure Riser, the strips were cut 12" long by 1.5" deep.  Glue them onto the risers in any fashion you choose so that it sits up stable.  I placed my steps at the ends of the strips, and used what was left from my rectangles I cut the stringers out of as middle supports.  When you are done, you have something that looks like this...

Thanks Dan, but I have a lot to learn yet.  While I'm just the apprentice, YOU are the master!

JediScholar,

I used your technique for building these stands. Question for you regarding the black riser stand: did you paint it or was it already colored that way? If you did apply paint, did you use a specific paint or technique? Foamboard is so absorbant, I am concerned with paint deforming the materials.

Thanks for the instructions below. I've been looking for a way to display my loose figures for a long time and this may be my solution.  Pretty costly though. The stuff I used last night cost me $8.00 and I can display about 44 figures on them. At that pace, I'll need about $200 to build all necessary stands... I was so excited to display some good looking figures so I opened my CIV figures.

I used black foam board.  It was a heck of a lot easier!  I did, however, like the white better.  Also, be sure to place supports at the middle, as it will bend inward if you don't.

So basically when you are building these risers you are basically building football risers like you would see at a football game right? It seems pretty easy though but i guess i will have to just try this very soon.

That's about it. My oldest daughter walked down into the basement and promptly asked: are they watching a baseball game? She was summarily executed on site (by which I mean banned from the man room for 1 week).

I made a similar stand a while back, and painted it using thin coats of black paint, applied with a small foam roller. I never had any problems with warping or deforming the foamcore. Maybe the foamcore you used was a little on the thin side? I used 1/4" board, and had no problems. I don't have the stand anymore to show pictures, but I may have an old picture sitting around somewhere. I'll have to see if I can find one.

Mean Daddy!  :P
You should make a baseball dio with Vader hitting the ball with this lightsaber. The ball could be any of the Luke heads from recent figures. Empire Vs Rebels in Hutt Stadium.

Hey guys I was at Wal-Mart last night and noticed they have multiple colors of this foamboard. White, Black, Red, Yellow, Green, & Blue. It would be B.A. to set up a little riser for each squad with the risers in corresponding colors with the unit. Just thought I'd share the info. Scorch Out!
