Unaltered OT comming this fall
« on: May 03, 2006, 08:16:15 PM »
Well folks, for those purists that waited for the original triology to come out on DVD from Lucas, wait no longer. We will be getting the original unaltered version on disc this September and only for a limited time. From the article "This release will only be available for a limited time: from September 12th to December 31st."

read more at the official site,
http://www.starwars.com/episode-iv/release/video/news20060503.html

I for one am happy this is finally comming out, I don't need more copies but to see it as first viewed once again is along over due set. I will be buying one for sure.

Very cool. I'll get them though I admit I do like some of the changes ole Lucas made to them one of those being Hayden at the end of ROTJ. Ties into the PT more which I think is a good thing.

I, too, like some of the changes, but will DEFINITELY be getting the originals as they were first filmed!  However, my wife already told me I can't buy them when they hit...I have to wait until Christmas...

Good news, I'm fine with most of the changes the Lucasfilm made to the dvd's but I think it's just as important that we have the un-altered versions. These are also going to be sold individually and from the sounds of it will have both versions of the film, which is a good idea. It would be nice if each film also had new bonus features such as deleted scenes, and cast commentary. This also means for me that when the 6-movie box set comes out that there will be some new scenes added. By releasing the un-touched movies before the release of the saga set it stops people from complaining when they get new scenes in the set. I like most of you also have the un-altered versions on VHS but VHS tapes don't last forever and I look at these dvd's as collectibles. Also the movies may be un-touched but they are going to have the dvd quality look and sound to them.

I "found" three bootlegs of the Orignal Theatrical releases a while back and if you watch episodes back-to-back it's damn near night and day.

I agree Spice, I have a set of the Asian varitey and man it is  huge differnce. I like the new ones but nothing beats the nostalgia factor of the original. Even though I have close to a dozen sets of VHS and DVds I will buy these.

I will get them as well, wonder if they will have widescreen/fullscreen versions...wish they would do flip dvd's like some movies were released. Widescreen on 1 side and fullscreen on the other, now I know Lucas is probably too cheap and needs everyone to buy multiple copies, but I also hope the sound is fixed this time, its horrible on the 2004 dvd releases....the action is good but the music and dialouge was all screwed up. Hopefully this will be the last set I will have to buy to add to my already huge bootleg/legit lucas films dvd/vhs collections
They should also come with an exclusive pack in figure.!!!

I do like some of the changes made to the original movies for the special edition, but the changes are always a bit startling to me. I think that I watched those movies way too many times on VHS as a kid. I'm always really into the movie until one of the new scenes comes up, and then it's like a totally different movie. I think only those of us who grew up with the movies probably understands this. Eventhough I'm not thrilled to spend the cash to add yet another set of the trilogy to my collection, this newest (or is it oldest) set is the one to have. It's going to be a long wait until September when I can see Han shoot first on DVD. It's about time. Yeah!

I'm pretty sure that I'll pick these up. However, I have a question though. So, you're getting the latest edited edition of the three films, and then as a "bonus" you're getting the true-blue original versions? Why not save the money on those edited DVDs and just put together a 100% unaltered version? That s**t don't make a lick of sense if I read that right.  ::)

From what I understand each movie will be sold individually and each dvd will have 2 discs. 1 disc will be the 2004 versions that most of us already have and then the other disc will be the unaltered original movie.
The only question I have is what are the bonus features if any.

This is just stupid! This DVD is bull because 1: I won't be able to get it cause my parents will say what's the big differance between this one and the 2004 pack? and 2: Their right! It's not that big of deal. ::) They'll have to have add a lot more to make it special. When someone sees it let me know if it's worth it! Also I can't believe some of you guys buy bootlegs! It's like stealing and the more they make money from it. The more they'll kepp breaking the law! You really want to encourage it?

Ask and ye shall receive...this certainly has been in high demand.  I will probably be picking this up for the sentimental value of seeing the old trilogy on DVD in widescreen.

However, I do think that Lucasfilm is pulling a fast one on us....since they are selling all three separately...AND you have to buy the new version as well....we'll be spending $60 or so for three movies we already have.   ???

I hope we get SOMETHING to justify this more, as I hate spending this much money on this....give us the Holiday Special, or additional commentary....SOMETHING....

Also, what's with the limited release?  They're pulling a f*****g Disney on us...got to get it before December whatever or you'll miss out!!!  Christ...

ROFL very true though. I'll grab them but but like you said I would think we should get something else besides the SE editions we already got.

As much as I hate being a tool for the industry I am such a geek when it comes to star wars that I too will be getting these but I'm going to keep a close eye out for any info on the box set coming out next year (or so I have been assuming). I am also wondering if these will be released on HD in the coming year as if they are I will be forced to buy them YET again! Just like the LOTR trio..... Still as much as I like the new versions I do like the idea of having the REAL versions; the thing is though, why not just put these versions on the box set that will eventually grace our collections? Why all these "seperate" releases....? And if money is the only answer need I not remind anyone that SW is only the highest grossing franchise ever!  ::)

I'm sure they'll release it on HD, just to drain more collectors' pocketbooks....I wouldn't bet on HD-DVD lasting long, though....a) two competing formats....b) DVDs will likely become obsolete in six or seven years, now that everyone is storing and watching everything digitally.

I have bootleg figs and some disks.  Never think twice about it.

But I will be purchasing this set, as I always do, not just because it's SW, but I'm a huge movie DVD collector and gotta get em' all!!

I would have to disagree with you on this my friend... DVD has been around for a little over 10 years and have taken over the industry for home viewing. Now with HD and Blu-ray the format stays the same (mostly) and I don't think HD will really hit until the format wars are over... Anyhoo the digital storage libraries are nice but many people (including me) like to have things on hard copy. Many things can happen to digital storage... It's all up in the air of course  ::)

Just wondering what people thought of the new covers that for this set.  They can be seen here
http://www.starwars.com/episode-iv/release/video/news20060516.html
I think they look pretty decent.  I glad they didn't use the same covers.  I also like the fact that they used the gold color for the trim so they can match the prequal trilogy.

True, but if you have all of your movies digitally stored, couldn't you just burn a DVD if you want a hard copy?

:o Man I love those DVD covers!!! And I hope we get some pics of the new figs.. (probably re-packs).. Anyway....

Having things digitally stored is a good idea for people who don't already have hundreds of movies but there are many things that can go wrong with having everything digitally stored. Plus if you have to pay for them it would be a major loss if anything happend. I mean if you download stuff (for free) then it's no big deal, but to make a copy that is as good as dvd or HD dvd is tough to do especially if you don't have thousands to spend on copying equipment. As of right now there isn't really anything in the MARKET that will allow you to copy a film completely from it's original (meaning with the proper bitrate and sound).

Holly crap! Man Hasbro must be wanting to clear out their wherehouses...... I do like the packaging though.... but to just put in old figures with no additions is just not cool!  Especially putting a really good Pick of Fett and Vader on the Empire Strikes back and not even having them in the package! That's screwed!

Considering how these figures are nothing more than peg warmers here why would I want to buy 3 packs of what I already own?
