Re-read the ending. The Empire got ahold of the virus, they were just bio-engineering it to make it more deadly. So the actual virus wasen't what we read about in DT. The Empire made it do those things by creating a deadlier version.

I took it off the bookshelf and put it into storage, along with the prequel Red Harvest
