GI Joe Rise of Cobra figures...
« on: July 01, 2009, 04:51:38 PM »
I saw these up close for the first time today at Target. I must say they aren't that good. They had Rip Cord, Heavy Duty, some Cobra trooper, etc. The Heavy Duty I saw the paint job was horrible his facial expression was terrible and he looked liked he was cross eyed and looking up. I was not impressed with these. I like the new heroes line that I saw the other day better than these.

Looks like Hasbro must have pulled a bait & switch from what they showed at Toy Fair. The stuff there didn't look all that bad. ???

Heavy Duty is completely horrible looking his face looks awful. I don't think a good paint job could help him. I was not impressed with the first wave of figures that I saw today. These did not do the pictures from Toy Fair justice.

The image I saw online was decent and they actually nailed a very close likeness to Marlon Wayans for Ripcord. I plan to pick up a few of these mostly for customs though, Ripcord's outfit would make great Mandalorian Armor, as well as Dukes Accelerator and Reactive armor suits. I also have very special plans for Agent Helix!

These are really cool looking figures but I just can't see them being Joes even though I know they are. To me they just look like some dollar store cool figure you find in the basket.

I saw some more of these today at Target Deep 6, Scarlett, Cover girl, etc. those looked alright. They resembled the actor/actress. But Heavy Duty is still awful. His facial expression is horrible and his eyes are horrible.

These figured looked good in the Toy Fair pictures but that doesn't necessarily mean the finished product will look like the display ones unfortunately. They definitely took their best ones for that show and for the all the shows they end up doing. Don't get me wrong some of the ones I saw today did look good like Scarlett, Cover girl, Deep Six, and a couple cobra guys. But the others weren't as good.

Well,

The stores in my area have this incredible paranoia when it comes to the "NO NOT Display"stamp on the box.TRU and Target are suppose to have the GI Joe stuff out tommorrow. As for Walmart have no idea what there'er doing.

at a Target today I saw Night Hawk (ship) or something like that. Looked pretty cool. The packaging had GI Joe Raise of Cobra on it so I guess it is from the movie.

I was at attleboro target and I asked if they had the roc figures and toys and they said they had a street date and he went into a rant about stores breaking the street dates.. I let him go on.. I just wanted to know if they had them.. I was looking for the white hiss tank.. not sure if that is out now., as the roc stuff was in plainville and millbury.. so some let it slip. 7.99 for the figs and cant remember how much the small vehicles were..

I was in Target yesterday and they had a whopping display of one peg with a Destro, Baroness, MARS Trooper and someone else. That was it.

Dont fret Dave, I still havent seen any ROC stuff here as well, and im not interested in them that much. Especially the vehicles, Im a new beliver in REAL 1:18  toys and well.. the ROC stuff is pure crap in my eyes

example:

The new nightraven?? no rolling wheels.. smaller than the original??= Fail

Accelerator suits??  their soldiers, not robots= Fail

The PITT?? Looks like a brick with wheels and has nothing going for it except a cardboard ping pong table..=Fail

I do however like some of the Cobra soldiers though so all is not completely lost

Way to go HASBRO! :-X

I saw alot of these today and really like both Snake Eyes and both Storm Shadows. The Zartan figure is very weak looking and Destro and Cobra Commander are just OK. Some of the vehicles look to be pretty cool and I was surprised to see the large transport vehicle (sorry forgot the name) for $99 I think at TRU.

I saw a bunch more today. I like Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow. Shipwreck looks good. Overall most look alright except for Heavy Duty his eyes bother me. I did notice that there was a Snow Job with ship at Target and TRU. He looks a lot like the cartoon version of the figure. Not sure if this is the same figure or not. I also noticed that with some of the other ships with figures. The figures looked like ones from the original line.

As far as the movie goes I think there will be some things that might seem odd and make people go WTF but I think in order to modernize a franchise you need to do things that people will not like especially the die hard fans from the original outdated version of the franchise. What I mean by outdated is things from the original series may not relate to today's world. If that makes sense. Why else would you bring to life a series from the past if you weren't going to give it a modern feel bring in a new level of fans and hopefully get the interest of the old timers. That is just my opinion I do think from time to time you need to reinvent something to keep interest alive for the future.

I will be happy with a well done non-stop action flick with just a little bit of a decent story.

Unfortunately they are already talking about a love story triangle between snake-eyes, scarlett and ripcord - God I hope not, but that is the early word.

Back to the figures, the snake eyes, storm shadows looked acceptable not great IMO, but I did pick them up in honor and rememberance to my youth's favorite characters!!

I liked destro as a kid also, but I left it behind because I like the exclusive planned for comic con way better.

DUDE it's G.I. Joe I don't want no love story I wanna see stuff exploding, awesome fight scenes, and yes a lot of big ticket movies have screwed up on the fight scenes. My guess is they will totally funar the characters introduction into the story and it will be messy at best.

My simple point is it won't be hard to make this movie at least cool, but I have a funny feeling it will suck.

Action Movies I liked
Star Trek (Thought it was great)
Dark Knight (Amazing)
Iron Man
Yes they all had a cheesy love story in them but they didn't let it screw up the movie

Action Movies I didn't like
Watchmen (If I never see little Dr. Manhatten again I would be happy, and those horrendous love scenes)
Hulk
Spidey 3
Wolverine (Action good, story was poor, love scene = crap)

Meaning as long as it has blowings up going on you'll be happy.

What was wrong with Hulk? It was a fantastic movie, well written, well acted out, and paid homage too everything that is or was hulk, except that Ang Lee pile of s**t we got a few years back.

Iron Man was typical blow s**t up and the people will love it, with mindless action and no plot, while taking a shot at the troops and the current president at the time.
Iron man blew up in a lot of ways, some times it blew out as well imho :puke:

Ok so Iron Man took a shot at the local government.. Think back this was one of the things that made the comic seen explode back in time!!! Think back in the 80's (not sure how old you are, and my apologies if you weren't around or very young to remember first hand), but this is exactly the angle they used attack the current government and low and behold all of the sudden the comic scene exploded and government used it to there advantage, they then went on a war against drugs with comics, kinda like a team up of superheros and local government against drugs. Needless to say it worked for all parties.

Are you saying Iron Man wasn't well acted out?

Liking a story or an individuals perception of a story is truly on the individual, and that alone is what makes Hollywood. I have plenty of stresses in life and I go to the movies to escape reality for 2 hours.

Hulk wasn't terrible but I fell a sleep the first 2 times I watched it, when I finally watched the whole movie start to finish I was like ok I am in no rush to watch it again but I most likely will watch it again someday, where as Iron Man I loved the acting and loved the action.

OK so I was in Target today, and spotted a few of these new GI Joes that looked like they could be useful as fodder for some other customs I have to work on, so I picked up a few. All I have to say is HOLY s**t HASBRO you could have made these figures $2 cheaper if you didn't waste so much plastic making these GINORMOUS launching things!!

I know, I know, those projectile launchers make them "kid friendly" right? Well I have news for you. When I was a kid, if I got a toy that had some kind of firing mechanism on it, my parents took the projectiles AWAY from me so that no one would get shot in the eye or swallow it!

The size of the launchers that comes with every figure in this line is just stupid. There really is NO purpose to them. Absolutely none.

I am not really into the basic figures all that much with the "Rise" figures.I did manage to pick up the Ice Dagger, very nice vehicle.I am really interested in the caed Hawk that's in wave 3 and the Pit commando.Other then that, there really is nothing else that impresses me.

I'll have the woman check this afternoon if not tommorow at our Target. I seen quite a few of the Joes but I couldn't remember which ones you needed. I'm also thinking of getting a few myself just for openers to be a fill in with my SW shelf.

I'm really confused because I don't know what figures are "supposed" to be out now, and which aren't supposed to have hit yet. Reports that I read say that Agent Helix is in an assortment that hasn't hit yet, but I see people finding her... also, I've seen some figures only once, like the black armored Scarlett. I saw that figure (and bought it) the first day I saw RoC figures but haven't seen her since.

I dunno about this line. Covergirl and Deep Six looked decent enough so I picked em up. But I think that will do for me on the ROC figures! I read the article in Toyfare and it only pissed me off more. Scarlett looks like a lobotomy patient! Yikes! What is with a MOUTH on Snake Eyes mask? Sweet mother of mercy! I can't believe this line killed the 25th line!! WTF is up with Cobra Commanders noggin? Acid Bath? On the positive side I do like a few of the vehicles, a FEW.  :-X

I do believe this movie will SUCK. It may even bring a new meaning to SUCKING!  ::)

I mean WTF no Snake and Scarlett love interest? Seriously? Even if you don't follow the comic then she should be with Duke like the cartoon!! Ripcord? Seriously? Seems like Destro is the only thing that is close to the original RAH stories. I think the article saved me a night at the movies!! I was skeptic about the film from the first Superbowl trailer. But I don't think I can put money to a turd movie.

;) at least we could get a little mustard for such a burger! Helps to wash it down! But no they gotta suck all the cool out of the stuff we grew up with!! have another? Why sure at least Shia isn't playing Duke! Any one else read the article in the latest Toyfare?

helix did not make it in to the film.. that was a shame.. like the character and the figure.. baroness - I was hoping for the eastern bloc accent.. unfortunately.. americanized.. crap.. but she is still hot.. the action figure still looks way too skinny. the paris pursuit figure with coat seems better proportioned.

Yeah, Helix only shows up in the video game.

I've bought several of these new movie figures for customs lately, and I have to say... Hasbro could have made these like $1 - $2 cheaper EACH if they didn't include these ridiculously over-sized projectile launching guns. I mean, seriously, who designed these?? Rob Liefeld? They are even too big for him to have done it, I think.

She's a good fodder figure IMO, simply because good female fodder is very hard to find. Most all of the SW chick figures suck in some way or another...

Oh I agree with ya there.

I just don't like her hair style or lack there of at all. She would make a great mando chick, perhaps Boba's grand daughter.

And as soon as they're done making money hand over fist on the Exclusive they'll release a slightly repainted version in the basic line! Honestly he spent 90% of the movie without the the damn helmet, and what are the only available figure(s) of him in the main line!

That sucks, cause a version like that would probably be the closest I get to owning a Doctor Who figure...

I'm seeing a ton of these in stores still so I can't wait for them to start hitting clearance prices! I hope it happens soon, because I'll probably clean them out. What I really want to see clearanced is the PIT Mobile Headquarters. It looks like a pretty cool playset, but I'll only get it at marked down price.

I don't think these will hit clearance like other figures have this line will continue as G.I. Joe always has with more repaints and whatnot.
Fred Meyer just had a sale buy one get one free last week, that would have been a good time to pick up a few!

Same here at both the Wal-Marts and Target. They each of 30+, possibly more, so I think if they want to get rid of them then they'll clearance them eventually since they're basically just movie based figures really. Course I was hoping the Wolverine figures would get to the clearance aisle too, but they never got there.

While not a fan of ROC or the movie, this is pretty cool for those who are less fortunate:

HASBRO’S G.I. JOE BRAND JOINS FORCES WITH
TOYS FOR TOTS AND ACTOR DENNIS QUAID
IN AN IMPORTANT HOLIDAY MISSION

Be a Hero and Help Deliver the Magic of the Holidays to Less Fortunate Children

PAWTUCKET, R.I., November 10, 2009 – Over 14 million children live in poverty in the United States.  They need a hero this holiday season and here to answer the call of duty is the G.I. JOE brand from Hasbro (NYSE: HAS).
Hasbro’s G.I. JOE brand, the Marine Toys for Toys Foundation and actor Dennis Quaid are joining forces to help make this holiday season a little brighter for less fortunate children.  For every G.I. JOE: The Rise of Cobra toy purchased at stores from November 11 through November 26 (Veteran’s Day through Thanksgiving), Hasbro will donate a new toy (up to 300,000 toys with a minimum $3.99 value) to Toys for Tots.
Actor Dennis Quaid, who plays ‘GENERAL HAWK’ in the 2009 blockbuster film G.I. JOE: The Rise of Cobra, from Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Entertainment, in association with Hasbro, will voice a national radio spot, due to premier on Veteran’s Day, November 11, to help raise awareness for this campaign and the positive impact The U.S. Marines and Toys for Tots make on the lives of children.
“As long time supporters of Toys for Tots, we recognize and applaud the important work the organization does on behalf of economically disadvantaged children nationwide,” said John Frascotti, Hasbro’s Chief Marketing Officer. “In working with Toys for Tots once again this year, they were very clear that new toys for the children they serve would be in greater need than ever during these difficult economic times, and we are pleased to step up and do our part.”
“We know this year will be especially hard on families as many have already started to significantly tighten the purse strings,” said retired Marine Corps Major Bill Grein, USMC (Ret), vice president of marketing and development for the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.  “These families need a hero this holiday season and Hasbro is it.  Their generous gift of toys and games will enable us to deliver the magic of the holiday season to many of our nation’s neediest children.”

That's pretty cool. I'll have to wait to grab some of the clearance stuff till after tomorrow so they donate some more.

That is cool, I just wish Hasbro would go pull all the older SW figures from stores and donate them, heck I still see a few Saga 2 cards at certain Walmarts!

exactly what i said last week. I thumbed through all of them and didn't find any worthy to bring home. now if they would only mark down some of the vehicles, that wouldbe a different story!

Got the PIT Mobile Headquarters on sale for $40 at K-Mart (was $100). I was pretty excited after that find. If you've been eyeing this set then be sure to check for it in the clearance aisles!

I've actually never seen this in the wild, of course I'd never buy it at any price it has no use nor appeal.

I like it. It's a pretty big size and has lots of play potential for kids. More so then the Turbo Tank set from Star Wars since this opens up into a base playset.

The Cnquest x-30 was what I was going with.TRU had a F-22 under the name of True Heroes.I thought it would look cool repainted. There is a website called Cobrastickers.com and they have a good selection of  replica decals for some but not all GI Joe vehicles. The decals are precut and can be peeled off.I only used a few stickers.I am not a fan of the mouth and Eyes sense those would be impossible to get right.

These were GREAT toys, Hasbro did a great job with them.  I'm happy to see them on the clearance rack where they belong, because call me crazy, I didn't see too many collectors that were crazy about the flick.  I know I've been one of the harshest critics, but if you liked that steaming pile of crap you must have never picked up even one of the comics written by the great Larry Hama.  :)

They are a very well done set of figures. My only complaint about the whole line is they could have used some holsters. Seeing how almost every figure came with a pistol it would have come in handy.

I'd like to second that... I thought those comics had a far better story. Better character development... All of that would have been a far better movie or movies... Hama had balls. Heck he killed off many of the joes he hated, including Battleforce 2000! Got to love that about him. I have heard that he's back and going to get to finish the RAH series from Marvel starting with...

Two different worlds Spice!
Besides wouldn't it meant that you can't accept change if you're not even willing to open up to the new movie? ;D
We all know Hollywood went this route because lets face if they'd stayed true to the comic it would have been more of a homage to the older fans, and they were trying to attract a wider audience.

Your right Shawn, I am one of them guys who likes something good, that works and I usually try to stick with it.  I hate when you have to upgrade operating systems, email interfaces and crap like that.  However GI Joe was way more sacred to me than that.  There would have been no problem altering the story, but not as much as they did.  Cobra was ruined...  How do you go on from there?  Call me crazy but with the Atlantis looking undersea base, had they not already risen???   ::)

Now I liked the movie better than TF2! The Snake Eye's and Scarlet story from the comics would have worked far better! They really screwed the pooch on the Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes relationship. And Duke and Baroness? Really? Sure that makes sense... Funny how the comics seemed more based in reality than the new movie... It's one of those things that works well on its own without having to be rebooted. Sure upping the action would help make the story move along faster, but staying true to the comics would have made for a better story and deeper characters. Not just for old comic fans... But for people who actually like character development and PLOT. Hama could do that. The comics were way grittier and less glitzy. No super mech-suits... No Nano Probes (at least in the Marvel run)...

But you can't always get what you want... But I would really like some holsters on my Joe figures please!  >:(

What worked for me was in the beginning before any trailers or info leaked I prepared my mind for this movie to be nothing like either the Comic or the old Toon series. I new Hollywood would just screw up another property like they always do with remakes, so I went to it as if it were a Starship Troopers type of movie!
I only hope they don't screw up the A-Team but I fear they already have with the cast they hired. :-\

I bet you almost crapped your shorts Chad man!  :o  I know you've been looking for that for a looooooooong time.  :)
There will come a time when your training ends. There will come a day when you have learned all the lessons, when all my knowledge of the dark side will be yours. On that day you will challenge me for the title of Master, and only one of us will survive the encounter.

Nope and I've been doing alot of business with him. He's been my ONLY source of finding items cause without him, I wouldn't have NOTHING when it comes to SW or any Joes or even TF's as well.
