Lenny Kravitz
« on: January 21, 2008, 04:48:41 PM »
WHY does this icon not have a thread in our music section? I see he's about to drop his EIGHT studio album and this guy is no doubt the Hendrix of my generation. I've seen him several times in concert and from the liks I've heard, sounds like he's made yet another worth paying for! Anyone else think Lenny is top rankin'?

Count me as another non-fan of Lenny. All of his songs sound the same to me.

The only thing I've liked by him was the 'American Woman' video because it had Heather Graham in it. Ooooo baby!

I like Lenny, can't say I'm a big fan.
I've bought about 4 CD's over the years and will probably buy his new release when it comes out. But I wouldnt exactly call him an Icon or place him at the right hand of Hendrix or Clapton.

Is it true that this new album will be the mellow-mature type album circa Rod Stewart?

From the one new song I heard, yes.

But his first two albums (and best, IMO) were pretty mellow. He's got a few great songs, some good songs, and a bunch of other crap.

One I think you really gotta see live to appreciate. I caught him at the Riv in Chicago and also up in Milwaukee back in the late 90's and I really gotta say I walked away impressed both times. He puts on a killer set. I can't listen to Mr. Cab Driver anymore cuz I think of Howie the Town Car driver from NYC! Got Watah?  ::) ;) :D

Funny story about LK:

A friend of mine's band was recording an album in Hoboken, NJ at Water Music Studios back in the late 80's/early 90's. They were doing a cover of Kiss "Black Diamond", but as they were a speed metal/thrash metal band, the singer couldn't hit the notes in the "Oooh-oooh" chorus parts. They were taking a break from recording, when they heard another artist cutting some tracks. They waited for him to finish and take a break, and they asked him if he would mind doing the backing tracks for them. He said he would, but asked not to be credited when the record was released, because he was cutting his first record and was trying to make a name for himself. That artist was LK, he was in there recording his first record. He did the track, but it ended up cut from the album. They still put him in the thank you section of the record, even though his record hadn't been released yet.

The song actually was released a few years ago when the drummer (my friend) found some old tapes of his band that had been broken up for some time and put an "unreleased recordings" cd out. Again, LK's name is not in the credits, but he is in the thank you list.

IMHO:

Lenny Kravitz is a great musician who has seriously underachieved his potential.  I appreciate his edge towards nostalgia, which can make some of his songs quite enjoyable, but he's had a hard time finding an original voice on his albums.  Are You Gonna Go My Way is about his best attempt at trying to present his own style.

He's got an incredible stage presence and some of his older stuff is better no doubt, as is with most artists.
