Title: ITLOF: Card Bending

Check out my latest installment, where I sound off about idiots who love bending cards, so that those collectors who prefer MOMC have to pass them up due to their non-minty look.

I honestly haven't seen it too much with the Star Wars as much as Major Sebastian Bludd taking it in the GI Joe section!  >:(   What a sackless individual to do something to stupid.  :(

You hear these stories from all around the states on finding these kinds of destruction quite frequently, it's enough to burn you up.  I personally have not seen it here where I live, but it may just be an exception to the rule.

I've personally not seen to many examples of this where you know for a fact someone was being cruel. Anytime i've seen bent up cards, i've always written it off to box damage. NO way that's what happened at this store that 'strho hit.

I've SEEN it PERSONALLY with my own eyes. I have seen a few GI Joes thumb print in and a few of the clone troopers totally smashed card and that was at the target in florence AND Toys R Us.

There has been a guy in Central MA that has done this to both G.I. Joe and SW. He has done this at two stores so far. One was a TRU all the black coined Legends. Then he went to the Wal-mart near my house and did it to all the new G.I. Joes single figs and carded. Bosskmr let the folks at TRU know and I let the folks at Wal-mart after that nothing else has happened. granted no new figs have come out since so who knows.

That's pretty sick chewywook that someone would do that. That person should be MADE to pay something on all those damaged figures.

I havent seen this near me. There are usually one or two bent cards but they are always peg warmers so im sure some kid just accidently did it

This definitely wasn't some accident that a kid did. It was some dude who was trying to be a major d**k and did a good job at it. I saw bent cards just like these at another Wal-Mart and Target. Someone deliberately bent them.

I usually don't see this type of stuff at any of my stores, mostly because the pegs are usually either a) completely empty or b) filled with old ass s**t that no one will buy anyway.

To quote my cousin Tweeny: "Just once I'd like to walk up and catch someone doing that, JUST once!"   ;D  AT the very least I'd have to tell that person what a wuss they really are but I wouldn't want to pick up a court case for something so stupid.  >:(

This doesn't happen so much here. I think do it's pure EVIL, almost as bad as slicing! I can almost see some Comic Book Collector guy from the Simpson's look a like, bending the cards to hopefully increase the value of his own collection. Why would anyone do this who isn't insane?

Most of the time I open everything, so I'll buy em as long as they the figure is in good shape.

I hope all the benders out there get horribly infected cardboard cuts.  >:D

what is the purpose of card bending?  i mean, is it as simple as some 30-something spoiled brat just having it out on the collector community?  is it supposedly to increase the value of his own collection?  (this isn't too rational; there are more cards out there than could ever be bent.)

my mom tells me never to try to rationalize the behaviour of irrational people.  but i can't see even the warped logic behind bending cards.  how childish can a guy get?

Yes,..... it's sad that anyone would do that, but I've seen it all to many times in stores. Most of the time I've seen it, it's either from   (A. Other collectors) and (B. Store employees). That has been my thinking on card bending.

I think the stores do this 9 times out of 10. Who else has anything to gain from this? A collector? A angry kid?

but what do the stores have to gain by it?  a bunch of beat-up pegwarmers that nobody wants?

Collectors get the short end... Kids don't care about MOMC. Allot (not all stores) hate us collectors... I'm not sure why, but I get a ton of tude from employees at certain stores. I'm a pretty nice guy so it's not like a reaction to my attitude. Just my theory, but I think they do it to put the harder to find stuff in kids hands.

It's kind of like how certain stores (KB, Rite-Aid) would put multiple p-tags on the old POTF stuff. Like 3-4 all over the cards, making the MOMC crowd shy away. I had a buddy that worked part time at a Rite-Aid and the manager made them do this to fend of the collectors.

Luckily I open 97% of my toys, but it still gets to me.

I see this in Indy a BUNCH....it really ticks me off. What be such a tool?!

The other big problem I've seen recently is people stealing the droid parts. I'll find a certain elsuive figure, only to discover that its been "invaded" for its droid parts.

I'm lucky to tell you guys that I have never seen these things over here. But on the other hand the dutch collectors aren't that die-hard so they don't mind (except for me).

I think the only way around that would be to list what droid part is inside with a picture, but not actually have it so someone has easy access to the part itself.

I seen someone did a good job on the Star Wars figures at Target off highway 50 in Kenosha, WI the other day. It's really sad to think someone would do something like this, even sadder the stores could give two squats if you did waste your time to say something to them.  :-\

Last week I was in Target and they had about 3 pegs filled with the new re-issue classic TMNT figures. EVERY card, and I mean EVERY card, had the top left hand corner bent down about an inch off the corner. And not just a little crease, I mean BENT almost to the point where it's tearing off.

Why the f**k would somebody bother to stand there for the amount of time that had to take to bend every card? Had to be close to 30 figures if not more. Unbelievable.

I still see this happening at the local retails joints by me, but luckily it hasn't been all that bad. It is bad, though, when you're trying to find that one HTF item and the damn thing's cardback is BENT or the bubble is DENTED. f*****g bastards!

You know this card bending issue used to bother me immensely during OTC, Saga2, and TAC, but now that I only collect loose It bothers me not.

I found the new wave of clone wars figs...some tool went through and bent the card on every figure. This always happens at this same Wal Mart!

I know it is wrong to damage property but to be honest - I love the card benders. That is how I have found most of the newer figures in my area. There are so many anal collectors here in Indy that when a new wave comes out it is almost impossible to get them the first go-a-round. They buy them all up and stick them on ebay or sell them at one of the many flea markets around here.

I always laugh when I see someone say that they could not buy the toy because it was not in a 100%  perfect package.

All-in-all you should not damage property that is in a store even if it helps others out.

I see where youíre coming from. Iím not as concerned with having perfect packaging as Iím with trying to discern the mindset of these knuckleheads.

As far as people buying up a new waveÖÖwhen are they gonna learn? I donít consider myself one of these predatory collectors that hit stores daily (like the Hot Wheel guys waiting outside the door of Toys R Us), but Iíve rarely had an issue with finding figures. The fact that every flea market vendor is sitting on piles of Orange and Green carded figures is proof that buying/selling modern action figures isnít going to finance your kidís college.

The real knee slapper are those folks on Craigslist that think they can get $500 bucks for their pile of 30 or so figures from the mid 90s.

I have seen alot of card bending. I caught a scalper buying all the hard to find GH gold coins
& bending the ones he couldn't afford a few years back, chewed him out got a manager &
Walmt busted him, had him on video destroying their property. Made him pay for anything he
damaged & banned him from store. He wanted to be the only guy in town with them to sell.
