Empty pegs everywhere!
« on: July 18, 2010, 10:39:51 PM »
OK, so I woke up this morning, and decided since this is the last day that I have to myself (Linda has been away visiting her Dad all week) I was going to do something I haven't done in a long time... a good old-fashioned, all day toy run. I stopped and fueled up the ride, and $70 later I was on my way. Here's what I found...

I stopped at a total of 16 stores. Yeah, it's a lot, but I did a LOT of driving. I basically left my house around 10am and didn't get back till almost 6pm. All the stores are pretty much within driving distance from where I live, just not really close to one another, lol. But I just made a giant loop around half of NJ today.

Here's the count:

TRU - 6 stores (Elizabeth, Woodbridge, Watchung, Union, Secaucus, Jersey City)
WalMart - 4 stores (Linden, Watchung, Union, Secaucus)
Target - 6 stores (Linden, Menlo Park, Clark, Watchung, Union, Jersey City)

Out of all these stores, the pegs at EVERY Target and EVERY WalMart were bare. I don't mean, bare as in they had no new Vintage or CW/Legends... I mean bare. At most, a figure or two. Most of the stores literally had NOTHING on the pegs. Nothing (not even those Xizor/Leia comic packs). Well, they did have a few Transformer/crossover figures if that counts. And a few battlepacks laying around.

At the TRU stores in Elizabeth, Watchung and Jersey City I found the repacks of the new CW figures, along with some of the newer carded Legends. The other TRU stores - nothing new at all, same old crap. No vintage anywhere. I only found the new vehicle assortment at the store in Elizabeth.

This just begs the question - WTF? Who's at fault for this huge drought? Is it just that Hasbro is not shipping anything out? Are these stores 'hoarding' the new figures in their stockrooms waiting for a rainy day? Do they just not have anything to put on the pegs, old or new? How do they expect me to spend my money when there isn't a single figure on the pegs, SW or otherwise, that I haven't already seen for the past 4 months?

Because I looked at other lines too - IM2, Marvel Universe, GI Joe... there is NOTHING new at retail in my area right now. Nothing. I would have gladly accepted all the driving I did today if I turned up a Hulkbuster IM, or a Juggernaut or Colossus MU... even a Rhino from the new SpiderMan series. But no, not a damn thing.

FWIW TRU is having a 2-for-$9.99 sale on SW, IM2, Marvel and GI Joe figures, and I hit the motherload of City Strike Snake Eyes figures today, lol... every store I went into had at least 4 of them. Why couldn't I find a single one of these guys a few months back?

Brother, I feel your pain.  Went on a toy run myself Saturday.  Drove most of the Virginia side of the DC Metro area.  Saw some of the new repacks in the local TRUs (no vehicles out yet), but none of the Targets had anything.  Maybe a CDR Rex helmet and the toy blasters, but nada - zip - zilch.  And I was beginning to think it was just me....

Same thing here in North Texas.  Once the first leaked cases of new vintage figures and Legends figures hit the shelves, nada anywhere.  All the Targets I have visisted have almost their entire toy section on clearance.  Too bad it's the same old crap no one wants to buy.

Some TRUs broke the street date, which is why some of the newer stuff has leaked out (but only there).  The stores are trying to clear out old product, and some of them are also in the middle of resets.  This, and the line change means that you're not going to see a lot right now.

Two weeks from now, it won't be like this.

I'm in the same boat here in Iowa. Wallyworld's pegs have been empty for the past two weeks. Targets pegs and shelves have been empty for three weeks straight. Unless you want a remote control R-2 or the X-Wing. Everything else is GONE!
TRU has had the same crap for the last 3-4 months. Nothing new, nothing on sale and nothing selling.

It's a nationwide epidemic of mammoth proportions for sure!   ditto all that here in central Texas, Target=no action figures, only TF.  Wal-Mart, just left over Plo Koons and Saesee Tiins and whatever other pegwarmer may still be around.  TRU, the same as walmart.

It sucks when you have cash to drop (i want to buy $25 in figures to get free Rex helemt) and there's nothing worth purchasing.....nothing to army build with, argh !

I actually saw four of the black suited Clone Pilots - on ROTS cards - in TRU today. They were filthy, so I'm guessing they were found in the back while cleaning the stockroom. Also looks like they put out another case of the BG-J38/EU wave, because there were more of those on the pegs - at least the repacks - that weren't there over the weekend.

We will soon, the Hasbro presentation at Comic-Con just started 5 minutes ago.

Actually it says 8 -1 right here:

http://www.sandtroopers.com/events/sdcc2010/day1/hasbro/images/dscn3310.jpg  and I think $35 bucks?  NOT too bad!  :)  I'm not pissed off about how much I paid for the one I got now.  :)

It really amazes me that the stuff that sales out stores get less of but the stuff that sits there they get more of.Walmart sees the empty pegs but with paranoiain regards to the street date they pee a ring around themselves.Again, you have some manages that could care less if the stuff is put out or if your in my area our stores sit on the stuff.Put it our already.

Stopped at TRU yesterday. Some new vehicles, galactic heroes, and new action figures. Talked to 2 workers and they said the SW items weren't suppose to be out until Aug 6th. But the store manager said to put them out last week when they had the 2 for 10 deal. Not much left after that for figures. I am striking out again to keep the collection going for now.

noticed a glimmer of hope at  both target and walmart today both had empty pegs but both also had the new basic vehicle assortment available  ie cloud car, snowspeeder, various jedi starfighters, and blue republic tank.........  Also toys rus finally had the remote control hailfire droid which was an easy pass for me.... no At-At sightings here yet......

I don't blame TRU for dropping these a month early. They can't compete with the "big box" stores on price (Vintage at TRU: $9.99, Vintage at Target: $7.99) so they beat those stores to the punch to guarantee sales and cut down on potential peg warmers down the road.

I don't see Hasbro hitting TRU, the only "true" toy store left with any kind of fine beyond a slap on the wrist, but it could make for an interesting situation the next time product is shipped to the stores 4-6 weeks ahead of shelf dates.

How can that be allowed for one to do it?  I'd think Kmart would be more deserving seeing as they probably NEED the sales and are having a tough time keeping up with the Bullseye and Wallyworld.

How can that be allowed for one to do it?  I'd think Kmart would be more deserving seeing as they probably NEED the sales and are having a tough time keeping up with the Bullseye and Wallyworld.

Well from what I gathered It was so TRU could have a jump on the other big stores. Some kind of deal with the devil... Er I mean Hasbro. :)

Didn't make sense to me until you think about the overpricing. People willing to pay the premium to get them early has paid off for TRU.

KMart is different. Toys are not their life blood like TRU. People shop at KMart for clothing and other items. Toys are usually an impulse buy. Same with a place like Kohls. Small toy department in a giant department store.

You know back in the day Kmart used to be high volume toy mover, then they jacked up prices to compete with TRU! Now it seems like crap sits there forever preventing me from getting anything new!

This is really funny. We have 2 Targets in the Huntsville area.I went to one this morning that has not done any resets and the other Target on the south side of town put out everything.I know I wok at the distribution level but I am amazed how one store can get everything and the other hasn't done crap.

Same here buddy. The west side Target has a full display that includes the AT-AT. The east side has a sign hanging in the SW section that tells us to wait for a new set to be in place soon.

I finally picked up some vintage goodness today at Target.I got Dack and the AT-AT Commander. They had 2 of the AT-AT as well but I am hold off on it.Just a few of the ships. The Cloud car and the Snow speeder were no where to be seen. So,one Target has done thier set.I was even able to get the GI Joe Alley Viper as well.Good day already.Walmart on the other hand looks as though they have no love for Star wars. One walmart had the Attack Zue zue pat things were the star was stuff use to be.Walmart has alwats done a crappy job with doing thier resets on a timely manner.

I spoke with a Target employee today and was told that it's not "uncommon" for one target store to put toy products out 2-3 weeks earlier than the other. When she checked her computer she said a "slot" hadn't even been reserved in the warehouse for the new items when they arrive.
The lack of continuity just baffles the hell out of me.

Nothing really new here cept one of the walmarts have put out some of the Blockbuster Value Packs again, but they're all EP1 figures I got months ago. Did pick up a Gungan Warrior/Luke Stormtrooper disquise though, but that was it. Targe still has like six of the Arena Battle Packs, but mostly everything has been clearanced and sold. Kmart is useless and the WalMarts (cept for a few value packs at the one) all just have Yarnas.

I really feel bad for all you folks that have dozens of Targets, TRU's, and Walmarts to choose from and still it's barren, now you know what it's like for me all the time.
If it wasn't for the help of others online traveling 100 mile to shop and a little luck, I'd have absolutely nothing instead of 75% of what's out there!

Trying to say they are the biggest retailer and don't have to put out products.

I am being serious.

I think it will hurt WM though and it will justify WM shrinking the toy section again.

Pegs are empty or close in my Corning NY area. Still looking for the snow clone rex figure and a few others. But talked to a couple of my local TRU workers and they are saying this TRU is going to have a large display (15 or 20 ft worth) near the main entrance starting Wednesday morning. They are setting up late tuesday night for this. They didn't give a good reason why, but will have the 1st wave stuff and the new 2nd and 3rd wave of SW items. I will be spending money on that day I hope.  :chewie: ;)

Finally found the last 2 waves of the clone war figures, Wave 7 & 8, on my way home from Pittsburgh. I wish I had this luck in finding wave 1&2 from earlier this year. But today I found another Zombie Geonisian, I would like to find a few more of these figures though.

I see the last 2 waves of the clone war figures are hitting my local toy stores the last 2 weeks now. But what happen the final waves of the legacy or vintage figures? I haven't seen these since the 1st 2 waves came out. I like to get a new Gamorrean Guard and Admiral Aardvark figure plus a few of the never figures too. :(
