Star Wars 1978 Holiday Special
« on: May 08, 2005, 06:58:43 PM »
I downloaded this from Bearshare.  I think its a good idea that Lucas did not include this in any DVD releases. It does star Mark Hamil, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford as well as the droids and Chewy and a few Stormtroopers/Vader etc  The plot though is horrible. Han and Chewie are in the Falcon (these were actually good dialogue scenes between the two, as they appear as they did in the original Star Wars, but it is interwoven with established NEW HOPE tie fighter shots as they are being pursued to Chewies homeworld for 'Life Day'. The further downside is Chewies family awaiting his return home. Wookie roars and grunts and staring at pictures of Chewie in  very very lengthy and boring scenes, several infact...  They have cameos where Chewbaccas family contact Luke who is working on something with R2-D2, now Mark Hamil is having a bad hairday and his make up is heavy, again its good to hear the dialogue that you have never heard before. Also contacted is Leia who is with C3-P0 who wishes them a HAPPY LIFEDAY and enquires about Han. Various 70s TV Stars make cameos in very unforgivable, and highly forgettable scenes... they suck. We are talking Bea Arthur working as the bartender in the Mos Eisley Cantina, Wuhur is not working that night. She jokes with creatures and sings...  She dances with Greedo and Ponda Baba. They have a line dance out the door as she closes shop.
They within the special, have the introduction of Boba Fett through a cartoon. Luke and the droids track an oddly acting Chewbacca who has Han hanging upside down and bound in the Falcon. They soon befriend Boba Fett who leads them into a trap, as they discover Boba is working for Vader. Now this cartoon is good and very retro, but fans should love it.  I could not sit through the wookies awaiting Chewbacca, or the horribly acting Imperial soldier, but I did watch the scenes where Han and Chewbacca arrive, all for Harrison Ford saving the scene, and possibly the special, he is the only real good thing aside from the cartoon. The Special ends with Carrie Fisher lip syncing lyrics to 'Life Day' the tune playing, the opening of the Star Wars scroll. So basically she puts horrid words to the famous opening tune. Check it out if you dare...;) :-\ :'(

I have actually heard that this was sanctioned by Lucasfilm to be released on DVD...in limited quantities and at a hefty price...any credence to this?

And yes, it's a bad show....Chewie apparently has a son named Lumpy and a dad named Itchy....which hopefully is some indication of, as Gen. Kurtz would say, the horror...the horror...  It is laughably bad, though, so it may be worth checking out (certainly not worth spending money on).

All I can say is, apparently, Jefferson Starship were really big a long time ago in a galaxy far, far way.

For some sick and twisted reason I watch this every year the day before turkey day. I sort of created a tradition of doing so that started years ago. I am usually home alone that day getting stuf ready while Sue is working and I got into the habit of grabbing a pack of Guinness and sitting down to watch this horror show.  Now I have to just to keep the tradition alive. I would buy this on DVD as the VHS copy I have is getting worn.

Its tacky, its dated and its best forgotten but it is SW (sort of) after all.

I remember when I first saw at age 4. A couple of months ago I found this holiday especial in Limewire and downloaded it. Have not made a mpg to dvd convertion to save it. I also found the cartoon holiday special where Boba is introduced for the first time in the SW universe.

Wookie grandpa Lumpy,I think this is his name, in the VR goggles is the oddest think I have seen.  Carrie Fisher singing the "Life Day" song just made me cringe.

What is the worse thing from the show, in your opinoin?

Yeah, it may be bad TV now, but how many of you (who were alive to see it broadcast) have bad memories of it then?  My family had just moved from St. Louis out to a farm about 60 miles west and were living in a camping trailer for about a year while building our house.  We had this old sheet metal shed with a picnic table and a wood burning stove where we set up our TV (a black and white, btw).   It was November, it was cold, but it was Star Wars and it was new and we loved it.

I didn't see it again until 1993 when a guy I knew in England let me tape his copy.  You wonder how something like this could get made, but variety shows were the reality shows of the 70's, and Bea Arthur, Harvey Korman, and Art Carney were still big names then (I think Art Carney came out ahead with the best character).  I'm going to let my son watch it when he gets older just to see if he has the same reaction.  It may be that we just get jaded with age.

Whenever they make the HD Ultimate boxed set, I think this should be included.  For better or worse, it's part of the Star Wars phenomenon.  Although I could see Lucas dubbing Temora Morrison's voice into the Boba Fett clip to make it "accurate".

This would actually make a funny Robot Chicken clip.  George Lucas selling his soul to the devil in order to get Star Wars made; then after it becomes a huge success, the devil shows him the 'fine print' where he agreed to make this show.

Now that would be funny,

I actually had good memories of it when I was a kid, took me a long time after to find out what it was and then to find a copy, years back it was actually tough to find.

Ya always have to remeber that this movie was cutting edge for what it was back in 78' when star wars first hit big so i really do respect the thought that this movie is what it is for being bout 29yrs old.So even though some may not like it and i even thought it was a bit cheesy BUT i DID like what i did see, i do respect that it was one of the things that got star wars so big as it is today.

The retro part is a trip.

A friend of mine gave me copy of this fiasco a couple years ago.
And the thing I liked best was that he inlcuded a bunch of the old SW
toy commercials on it. So my family enjoyed that more than anything else.

When I downloaded this, I made my gf sit thru it with me.  I think we bonded over it, you know, like people tend to do when they survive a traumatic experience?

Every now and again, we quote it and joke about pouring drinks into the tops of our heads.

My DVD copy was supposedly transfered from a master tape at CBS... and it looks really really nice, especially compared with some of the bootlegs I've seen. Of course, you can polish and dress up a turd all you want, it's still a turd.

That said, last year I made my girlfriend sit down with me on Thanksgiving Eve and told her that I watched this every year on that night, like a tradition (I don't really, but I wanted to see what she said). Needless to say, if it was a real tradition, I'm sure it will be broken this year  :D

Well about a month back my friends and I decided that we would really like to see this because we had never seen it before so my friend downloaded a copy from somewhere and it took hours and hours. After that was done the new challenge became putting it on a DVD. I had tried everything, or so I though, but I think I finally found somehting that worked. In not 100% sure but if it did work I would be able to make a copy of it so if anyone hasnt seen this mess and would like to let me know and I may be able to get you a copy on DVD.

That's some serious cheese to wait all that time for. I picked one up for 10 bucks from a bootleg booth at a show a few years back. Pretty funny stuff when you think of Art Carney and Bea Arthur being part of the Star Wars universe!  ;D

Well I finally had time to sit down and watch this and it was everything it was rumored to be. I thought the best scene in the whole thing is when the stormtrooper trips over his own gun and falls to his death

I remember being a kid and watching this when it first aired. I had waited ALL WEEK for Saturday night to come just so I could watch this. My parents went out for the evening so my brother and I were stuck with a babysitter. Of course she had ZERO interest in SW and back then, there was only 1 TV in the house (weird to think about that) and she kept switching the channel. I don't remember what to, but I think it had something to do with KISS. Whatever. I remember at every commercial she'd flip over to her stupid KISS show and always 'forget' to turn back to THS and when she would we'd see a minute or two before the next commercial. >:( I was sooooo p*ssed off at her that I remember complaining to my parents about her when they got home. :P

The funny thing is, the parts that she did let us watch were just uncomfortably embarrassing. Even as an eight year-old, I knew it was bad. Even the BS knew it and kept saying 'this is what you want to watch?" but I was so into SW I kept saying 'yes' even though the d@mn thing kept getting more embarrassing as it went on.

I don't remember what to, but I think it had something to do with KISS.

If I'm thinking proplerly, wasn't it that movie "KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park"? Because I can remember being torn about which one to watch and having to flip back and forth myself as they were both on the same night. I was a HUGE KISS fan when I was a kid.

I don't remeber the SW special because mainly I was 3yrs old and parents wouldn't let me watch anyway of it then if I wanted too because they where pretty strict then or well my dad was, but not mom. I have seen bits and parts of the KISS movie because my GF HAS the VHS tape of it.

It probably was.  :roflmao: I was going to say that but wasn't 10% sure. I wasn't even sure if it was even KISS related, but I remember she was a HUGE fan of KISS so the odds were pretty good that's what she was watching.

Agreed. I am glad I finally got to see it though.

Buddy and I used to try to watch it every year, figured eventually if we got enough alcohol in us and we built a tolerance to it we might be able to make it thorough...Never did pull it off, when Bea Arthurs singing is a high point you know its painful.

Lowest points off memory were the cooking show Mala is watching and the weird uncomfortable Itchy watching what is apparently some kinda weird hypnoporn...

I saw the anaimated clip on Youtube. The cool thing was that Luke and 3PO are in a 2 seater y-wing and when it crashes on the planet the cockpit detached from the rest of the ship.I never saw the live action part of the Holiday special sense I was only like 3 years old back in 1978.The only thing I remember getting Star Wars for christams was the Vader TIE Fighter in 1979.I loved that thing.

E
I've heard that Lucas isn't/or going to release this.
I still watch my bootleg DVD with my son and he enjoys the heck out of it.
Personally I still enjoy it myself. Come on. It introduced us to Boba Fett. And having the stars in was a plus. Having them to agree to take part in this was amazing in itself

From what I have heard Lucas wishes he could destroy every copy of the thing so I would say its chances of making it to legal DVD are about 0

Well, I could not help but chime in.
Most of you are correct.
It is not very good, but it depends on your point of view.

First, the cartoon w/Boba Fett.  Still the best.  I wish the series had this look.
Second, it included delete footage not seen until the Blu Ray release.
Third, McQuarrie paintings of the Wookie planet.  This is how Chewy's home was introduced.  So, it is official in a sort of way.
Fourth, Fisher had a screening at her home with friends/family.  She has a tradition of watching bad movies/programs.  Not sure if she does this today.
Fifth, you are really a fan to want to view it.
Sixth, there is even a website devoted ONLY to this special. Some up and comers were involved esp.  Stan Winston.  It is pretty interesting.
Seventh, Kenner almost had  a line on this special which is mentioned on the website.
Eighth, only other time when the entire cast was involved than the films.

I have a DVD which my friend made a excellent copy of it.  Great quality since it may not be released.  However, with Disney, it does make you wonder.
Thank you for your attention.
