Star Wars 1978 Holiday Special
« on: May 08, 2005, 06:58:43 PM »
I downloaded this from Bearshare.  I think its a good idea that Lucas did not include this in any DVD releases. It does star Mark Hamil, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford as well as the droids and Chewy and a few Stormtroopers/Vader etc  The plot though is horrible. Han and Chewie are in the Falcon (these were actually good dialogue scenes between the two, as they appear as they did in the original Star Wars, but it is interwoven with established NEW HOPE tie fighter shots as they are being pursued to Chewies homeworld for 'Life Day'. The further downside is Chewies family awaiting his return home. Wookie roars and grunts and staring at pictures of Chewie in  very very lengthy and boring scenes, several infact...  They have cameos where Chewbaccas family contact Luke who is working on something with R2-D2, now Mark Hamil is having a bad hairday and his make up is heavy, again its good to hear the dialogue that you have never heard before. Also contacted is Leia who is with C3-P0 who wishes them a HAPPY LIFEDAY and enquires about Han. Various 70s TV Stars make cameos in very unforgivable, and highly forgettable scenes... they suck. We are talking Bea Arthur working as the bartender in the Mos Eisley Cantina, Wuhur is not working that night. She jokes with creatures and sings...  She dances with Greedo and Ponda Baba. They have a line dance out the door as she closes shop.
They within the special, have the introduction of Boba Fett through a cartoon. Luke and the droids track an oddly acting Chewbacca who has Han hanging upside down and bound in the Falcon. They soon befriend Boba Fett who leads them into a trap, as they discover Boba is working for Vader. Now this cartoon is good and very retro, but fans should love it.  I could not sit through the wookies awaiting Chewbacca, or the horribly acting Imperial soldier, but I did watch the scenes where Han and Chewbacca arrive, all for Harrison Ford saving the scene, and possibly the special, he is the only real good thing aside from the cartoon. The Special ends with Carrie Fisher lip syncing lyrics to 'Life Day' the tune playing, the opening of the Star Wars scroll. So basically she puts horrid words to the famous opening tune. Check it out if you dare...;) :-\ :'(

I have actually heard that this was sanctioned by Lucasfilm to be released on DVD...in limited quantities and at a hefty price...any credence to this?

And yes, it's a bad show....Chewie apparently has a son named Lumpy and a dad named Itchy....which hopefully is some indication of, as Gen. Kurtz would say, the horror...the horror...  It is laughably bad, though, so it may be worth checking out (certainly not worth spending money on).

All I can say is, apparently, Jefferson Starship were really big a long time ago in a galaxy far, far way.

For some sick and twisted reason I watch this every year the day before turkey day. I sort of created a tradition of doing so that started years ago. I am usually home alone that day getting stuf ready while Sue is working and I got into the habit of grabbing a pack of Guinness and sitting down to watch this horror show.  Now I have to just to keep the tradition alive. I would buy this on DVD as the VHS copy I have is getting worn.

Its tacky, its dated and its best forgotten but it is SW (sort of) after all.

I remember when I first saw at age 4. A couple of months ago I found this holiday especial in Limewire and downloaded it. Have not made a mpg to dvd convertion to save it. I also found the cartoon holiday special where Boba is introduced for the first time in the SW universe.

Wookie grandpa Lumpy,I think this is his name, in the VR goggles is the oddest think I have seen.  Carrie Fisher singing the "Life Day" song just made me cringe.

What is the worse thing from the show, in your opinoin?

I only saw the Holiday Special once years ago so I can't remember a whole lot, as bad as people dis on it, maybe GL should redo it in special edition like the OT!

Yeah, it may be bad TV now, but how many of you (who were alive to see it broadcast) have bad memories of it then?  My family had just moved from St. Louis out to a farm about 60 miles west and were living in a camping trailer for about a year while building our house.  We had this old sheet metal shed with a picnic table and a wood burning stove where we set up our TV (a black and white, btw).   It was November, it was cold, but it was Star Wars and it was new and we loved it.

I didn't see it again until 1993 when a guy I knew in England let me tape his copy.  You wonder how something like this could get made, but variety shows were the reality shows of the 70's, and Bea Arthur, Harvey Korman, and Art Carney were still big names then (I think Art Carney came out ahead with the best character).  I'm going to let my son watch it when he gets older just to see if he has the same reaction.  It may be that we just get jaded with age.

Whenever they make the HD Ultimate boxed set, I think this should be included.  For better or worse, it's part of the Star Wars phenomenon.  Although I could see Lucas dubbing Temora Morrison's voice into the Boba Fett clip to make it "accurate".

This would actually make a funny Robot Chicken clip.  George Lucas selling his soul to the devil in order to get Star Wars made; then after it becomes a huge success, the devil shows him the 'fine print' where he agreed to make this show.

Now that would be funny,

I actually had good memories of it when I was a kid, took me a long time after to find out what it was and then to find a copy, years back it was actually tough to find.

Ya always have to remeber that this movie was cutting edge for what it was back in 78' when star wars first hit big so i really do respect the thought that this movie is what it is for being bout 29yrs old.So even though some may not like it and i even thought it was a bit cheesy BUT i DID like what i did see, i do respect that it was one of the things that got star wars so big as it is today.
