Changed Collecting Has:
« on: September 05, 2008, 08:55:01 PM »
Soon, a new online source for Star Wars collectors will open its doors! This online retail store called “The Collectorate” was created by a group or avid Star Wars Collectors. Their tagline, “By Collectors, For Collectors” , speaks to its origins and its focus. This group of enterprising collectors identified many frustrations they had encountered while purchasing items for their own collections. Finding no remedies for these frustrations, they decided to open a store focusing on the collector’s point of view. This is the first in a 5-part series previewing key features of The Collectorate.

Always get the Item you Ordered: The Collectorate ID©
In this posting we preview The Collectorate ID©. Each item in The Collectorate’s inventory is assigned a unique hexadecimal number. This number is affixed to each item by means of a small sticker that stays with the item throughout inventory, sales, packing, shipping, and direct to you. The stickers are produced exclusively for The Collectorate, and have a special adhesive that allows them to be removed.

The Collectorate ID© System allows you, the collector, to be certain you receive the exact item you selected online. You get to choose right down to the individual action figure. Now you can hand pick items just like you were there! What’s more, that number will never be used again. It belongs to you only! In part 2 we present...

Know The Condition Of An Item Before You Buy: The Collectorate Shield Rating© Stay tuned to Sandtroopers.com for next week’s preview article. Check The Collectorate.com often for more preview articles, sample screen shots, and the opening day announcement.
There will come a time when your training ends. There will come a day when you have learned all the lessons, when all my knowledge of the dark side will be yours. On that day you will challenge me for the title of Master, and only one of us will survive the encounter.

Hello Sandtrooper.com forum members,

The staff at THE COLLECTORATE will be monitoring this message thread and will be happy to answer an questions you may have about our new on line store opening soon.

To answer kkvolution's question: Yes, we are working right now to have a system for international shipping. During the time that our preview articles and splash page have been up we have noticed that there have been many visitors from England, Canada, and several other countries. Therefore, we are preparing for international customers as well.

Thanks for your interest in THE COLLECTORATE.

I presume the mian focus be Star Wars.
Will this new enterprise contain a menagerie other collections as well?
Also does this incude multiple facets of collecting such as mini busts, artwork, and other hi end items?
Any ideas if a published catalogue will be issued simliar to EE?

To Answer Bloodant,

Yes the beginning focus of the site will be Star Wars because we know that best (we are collectors first). Where we go from there we want collectors to take us. We will have a method for collectors to provide input on what items they want us to apply our system to. We have set up relationships with numerous manufacturers so that we can seek out new items as collectors tell us they want them. This would also be true of high end items. If you tell us that is what you want, we will go get it. Our preview articles on the splash page give you a sense of how the elements of our system work together to allow you to hand pick items out of our inventory to get just the one you want. This system can be applied to any type of item.

On the topic of published catalogs, our feeling is that a printed catalog moves too slow. In other words, it is obsolete by the time it comes out. Also, since our system gives each item a unique hexadecimal number and grades the item, you can pick individual items right down to the action figure. The "bulk" sales of a catalog is counter to the very level of service we intend to provide.

Thanks for your interest in THE COLLECTORATE.

To Answer jedibrian77,

Our 5th preview article will be coming out in the next couple of weeks. That article is called, The Collectorate Pricing Philosophy: A New Perspective. We don't want to trump that article before it comes out. And for competitive reasons we don't want to reveal numbers until launch. However, we know collectors might be nervous about what might be charged for our level of service. HERE IS SOME INSIDE INFO YOU WILL ONLY SEE HERE UNTIL THAT ARTICLES COMES OUT.

1. We don't believe in charging special prices on some figures just because they are selling well or because there are fewer of them in a case. Only exclusives and first day issues will be on a different price scale.

2. We will grade the packaging of items on a system that has 10 levels to cover the range you know as C-9 to C-7 (see article 2 on our splash site). That allows us to be much more specific. We have set up a standard sliding scale based upon a percentage reduction as the level of quality goes down. That means we offer a lower price for each of the 10 levels as quality goes down. You chose the level of quality and therefore price that you want.

3. All of our figures will include and be shipped in a protective plastic case (See article 4 on our splash site). We strongly believe this is the only way to protect the card during shipping.

We will be similar to other independent on line stores with just enough added to cover the cost of the plastic case and our added services. We are collectors first and we want other collectors to be able to obtain what they need to complete their collections and have access to good quality. We do not believe in jacking the price up to take advantage of short lived circumstances! We'll offer better service at a fair and realistic price.

Thanks for your interest in THE COLLECTORATE.

I like the part about protective case is used before shipping. A small action but an extra miles shown to the collector that they do care about the condition. Great! AAA++++  (I make it sound like some ebay comments...)

Congrats on getting the site started. I like the whole overall concept of not price gauging a figure or item because it could be the flavor of the month, down to the shipping process. I have a couple of questions.

1) Some other possibilities of product lines could be He-Man, GI-Joe, and Cars.

2) Obviously, hard to find figures are because they are packaged maybe 1 or 2 to a case, and the pegs get over loaded with previous released figures. I don't believe vendors can order 1 certain type of figure. Won't you end up with an inventory of items that just may not move, and not order more cases of certain waves so you don't get stuck with overstock just to get the collector a hard to find item?

3) Will you have any pre-sells of items?
Attitude with a smile :)

This isnt supposed to be as big a problem with TLC because they have to pack them more evenly because of the droid parts right?

Isn't that the same thing? 1st day issue figures are packed fewer in a case than regular figures... so how do you justify charging more for them?

Re: Changed Collecting Has:

Let's take these one at a time...

In Response To kkvolution:
We could not agree more about using the protective plastic case during shipping. As a collector, one of our owners purchased a collection some time ago on Ebay and the seller insisted on shipping the figures in the plastic cases. He made an impassioned argument for wanting the figures he was selling to arrive the best possible condition. Our owner never forgot that and has believe in it ever since.

In Response To Jimsjedi:
Appreciate the input on additional lines. We will need input from collectors to tell us what you would like us to carry. Obviously, we will grow with time, but we will look to the collectors to determine which direction to go in.

You are correct that Hasbro does not allow us to order just certain figures out of a case. You have to take the whole thing. They seem to pack the less desirable figures in to insure they sell. A lot of online retailers reduce the cost of the hard to sell figures and increase the cost of the desirable ones. We would rather just charge the same across the board. We think it will work out in the end. You are always going to wind up with some leftovers that are harder to sell. As long as Hasbro packs cases this way that will always be true. Its a balancing act. You may be aware that McFarlane handles this whole issue very differently. We can order whole cases of just one figure. We would really like to see Hasbro move to this system. All of us, retailers and collectors, need to continue to tell Hasbro how we feel about this issue. Hasbro's focus is the big box stores and that is probably why they pack cases this way. The big box stores don't mind this problem. They look at shear volume sales and expect some they can't sell.

Pre-sell items is an area we are working on. We will not open with that feature, but it is one we hope to add in the future. It creates some challenges to our system. We grade each item and allow you pick which items you want. We obviously can't grade pre-sell cases until we actually have them in hand. And Hasbro cases are very likely to have some damage during shipping due to the way they are packed at the factory. Therefore, it is impossible be sure we could fill pre-sell orders and use our sensitive grading scale. One idea we have discussed is reselling will a guarantee of a certain scale rating or above. We don't like this, but it seems the only way to give the collectors some kind of assurance on quality of the pre-sell.

In Respond To jedibrian77:
The Build-A-Droid cases are following Hasbro's standard case packing system. There are still more of some figures than others. Here is the break-down of the Build-A-Droid Wave 2 cases we received:

2x Clone Scuba Trooper
2x Obi-Wan Kenobi
1x Padme Amidala
1x Quarren Soldier
2x Clone Trooper (Cip Quad)
1x Mon Calamari Warrior
1x Saesse Tiin
2x IG Lancer Droid

Looks like the business angle always wins with Hasbro. As collectors we would like to think there can be balance.

In Response To jokabofe:
You are right there are fewer of both in a case. And from that perspective it is the same thing. Putting extra value on one collectable more than another because there are less of them seems unfair. However, we all know it is common in all collecting to give more value to the rare, special, etc. And what makes something more valuable is very subjective. So why did we decide not to charge more for regular figures that were less frequent in a case, but still charge more for 1st day issue? We felt that the first day issue really was something special other than just fewer of them in a case. We felt the same way about exclusives. As collectors we do see value in special items, but we don't like value added just because Hasbro put fewer of them in a case. Is that subjective? Yes, and no matter what we decided it would still be subjective. Please keep telling us how you feel. It keeps us thinking. We value what collectors have to say and we want to hear from you. We promise to give straight answers.

Thanks for your interest in THE COLLECTORATE.

ATTENTION HALO 3 COLLECTORS,

We need your input...

We have been asked if we want to increase our order for the Halo 3 Series 3 Red Hayabusa Spartan Soldier Action Figure that is due out this month. We already have some of these incoming in our original order.

The claim is being made that this will be one of the most sought after figures in the Halo 3 series.

Tell us what you think collectors. Is this a figure we should grab more of?

Thanks for your interest in THE COLLECTORATE.

A note to all Batman (Dark Knight) fans,

THE COLLECTORATE is considering whether or not to start carrying Batman items.

We have a line on some really cool high end stuff. We will let you know if we get it.

Wondering what the interest level is for Batman (Dark Knight) items?

This is the third in a 5-part series previewing key features of THE COLLECTORATE, a new online store that launches soon. THE COLLECTORATE was created By Collectors, For Collectors.

Know your Item is Protected En Route to You:

The Collectorate Shield Packing helps ensure that your item arrives in the same condition as when you selected it on our website. While the shipping carrier does play a part in that process, much of the damage in transit can be avoided with proper packing. The Collectorate Shield Packing is a 4-step process designed to maximize the protection of your items during shipping and transit. These steps may seem simple but our personal experience as collectors has shown us that these steps are not common practice everywhere.

First, we only ship action figures in a protective plastic case. If there is a protective case made for a figure and we can obtain it, we put the action figure inside it before we put it in a shipping box. This is the only way to protect the card during shipping.

Second, we only use 200 pound test shipping boxes. These boxes have been designed to pass a bursting test of 200 pounds per square inch. Starting with a better box means better protection for your items during transit.

Third, all of our products are cushioned during shipping with <u>biodegradable cornstarch peanuts. These allow your items to float while in transit surrounded by 360 degrees of cushioning. This type of cushioning provides better protection from all directions, and since these peanuts are made from cornstarch, they are static free and will not cling to plastic. If you have ever unpacked action figures packed in regular packing peanuts, you know this is a big deal! Best of all, since these packing peanuts are biodegradable, they will decompose in water leaving no toxic waste. This also means you won't have to fill an entire garbage bag to dispose of them.

Finally, all of our boxes are closed with bright white tape imprinted with a red fragile warning. It never hurts to remind everyone who picks up your box that your items should be handled with care.

Using The Collectorate ID, a unique hexadecimal number given to each item, and The Collectorate Shield Rating together, you can HAND-PICK the exact item you want right down to the individual action figure and be assured which item you will receive. Add to that The Collectorate Shield Packing and you can be sure that your item will arrive in the same condition as when you selected it on our website.

In part 4, we present: Protective Cases Included: All Action Figures Include A Protective Case

Stay tuned to Sandtroopers.com for next week's preview. Check THECOLLECTORATE.com often for more preview articles, sample screen shots, and the opening day announcement.
There will come a time when your training ends. There will come a day when you have learned all the lessons, when all my knowledge of the dark side will be yours. On that day you will challenge me for the title of Master, and only one of us will survive the encounter.

COLLECTORATE UPDATE!

Today we signed a contract with a national design firm to take over the creation of our site. What really impressed us was that many of their staff are collectors and they really seemed to understand what we are trying to do with the site.

They also read every word of this forum thread and many of the advanced functions we thought would be added to the site as upgrades later will now be built in from the start. I will be talking in this forum about some of them in the next few weeks. You will hear about it first here.

Here are two for now.

You will be able to search our inventory based upon Shield Rating!

And for you international collectors we will have UPS World Ship!

Now we just need to give this firm time to work. Your input in this forum has had a direct impact on the site development. Thank You!

Thanks for your interest in THE COLLECTORATE.

How much further do you guys lack from being finished on the site. I kind of can't wait to see what all will be offered and what the prices will be when the site goes live on the internet.

Man, do we know how you feel! We have been in the "can't wait" mode since April! We had to change site engines and design firms in midstream because some of the ideas from collectors we wanted to add were just not possible with the original engine. We were told 3 to 4 weeks at the switchover. It has been a week since the switch. We hope to have some new screen shots soon. And we hope to be open in October. Sorry, we don't have anything more definite than that right now. As soon as we do you will read it here first.

We can tell you that there are going to be some great giveaways associated with opening running for about the first month after opening. There will be enough items that multiple folks can win a prize. And we can tell you that several of the prizes will be the Stormtrooper Commander 30th Anniversary Figure that everyone had a hard time getting.

Hang in there, we are going to open!

Thanks for your interest in THE COLLECTORATE.

For all of you who have contributed to this forum, here is the announcement that went up on SandTroopers.com today. This one is for you!

THE WEEKLY COLLECTORATE UPDATE!

You the collectors have spoken, and we at THE COLLECTORATE have listened!

For the past several weeks, members of SandTroopers.com forums have been asking us questions and making suggestions. We listened and learned!

Halo Collectors in particular told us that they mostly open their figures after purchase. And some Star Wars Collectors told us they were “Army Builders” who also open their figures. However, we also heard from other Star Wars Collectors who really liked the idea of their action figures coming with and being shipped in a protective plastic case (See Preview Article #4 on our Splash Page).

Why not have it both ways?

ANNOUNCING THE “OPT OUT” PROGRAM

All of our Action Figures will still come with and be shipped in a protective plastic case as a standard practice. However, each Action Figure listing on our site will have an “OPT OUT” button where you can chose to “opt out” of the protective plastic case. When you click the button the case will be taken off your order and your cost for that Action Figure will be automatically reduced.

Now you can get all your Action Figures in protective cases, or some of them with and some without, or none of them with protective cases.

It’s your collection, you are in control! :hail:

Wow!, having protective case as a standard practice. I like that idea and even having the chance to op-out is even cooler. Another question I have is this.

So you plan to possible start up any TansFormers on the list for the site, since I am a collector of them as well?
Plus, if you do, are you going to have vintage all the way to the newest of the line?

The "Opt Out" Program is a direct result of collectors talking and working with us to address issues important to collectors. It was a group of Halo collectors who brought this to our attention. When we decided to include Halo in our collections we knew very little about that line. We have learned huge volumes about Halo in the past few weeks thanks totally to input and information from Halo collectors. Not to labor the point, but it is your involvement that is absolutely critical to us. By Collectors, For Collectors does not just mean the small group of collectors who are trying to create The Collectorate, but "All" collectors. We want you to believe us when we say "we listen."

To Answer VadersFist:

We have had several collectors ask about Transformers. We have begun looking into sources for this line. This is a line we know little or nothing about. We need input from collectors to steer us down the right path in this area and learn what is important to collectors.  Our site will have a survey type method for collectors to provide input into lines they would like us to add. We will add other lines slowly based upon what collectors tell us. When we add a line, it will be the collectors who determine what part or all of the line is important. It seems like you will be a good source of information for the Transformers line. We are forming lists of collectors who have experience in different areas. We communicate with these collectors to formulate plans. That is how the Halo group started. Someone stepped forward and said, "I will tell you what I know about this." Those folks directly influenced what product we ordered and will carry regarding Halo. We recently had someone step forward with info about Gentle Giant. If you are interested, please send us an e-mail to main@thecollectorate.com and let us know you would like to provide info on Transformers. Our site will have a system to do this, but for now this will work. The intent is to set up a group of collectors for each line who advise us on that line. Call it a, "Board of Collectors" for that line.

To Answer CommanderNaruto:

The credit for any improvement and progress goes to the Halo group. It was their idea.

To Answer Lt. Starfox:

Yes, we do plan to buy collections and figures. In fact, we have been purchasing since February 2008. Our site will not initially open with a "purchase" program, but we know for sure that we will add that in the future. That is a program that is yet to be developed. We want to hear from collectors what their ideas are about such a program. We want to know what you think will work and what you have encountered before at other places that did not work.

Thanks for your interest in THE COLLECTORATE.

Need Input From Collectors,

We would like to form groups of collectors for each collectible line to advise us on that line. Here is what our thoughts are so far...

1. The name of the program would "The Board of Collectors."
2. There would be a board for every major line we carry and those we are considering such as Star Wars, Halo, Transformers, GI Joe, etc.
3. The same person could be on more than one board.
4. There would be some type of application process. Obviously, you need to know a lot about the collectible line on whose board you are sitting.
5. Each Board would advise THE COLLECTORATE directly on that line.
6. The Board could also be a source of information for other collectors in that area.
7. There would be no cost to become a member of a Board.
8. Board members would enjoy benefits from membership that would aid them in their collecting. This could range from discounts, to special advance notice of events, to drawings for giveaways.
9. We will also have clubs for each line, but the Board would be beyond that level of involvement.

Need your input on...

A. How do we decide who becomes a "Board Member?"
B. How many folks can be on any one board, or is it unlimited?
C. What are your thoughts on what this board would do?
Any other thoughts welcome...

Thanks for your interest in THE COLLECTORATE.

Opps, forgot to add this...

If you are interested in becoming a Board Member, please e-mail us at main@thecollectorate.com or send us a personal message and tell us which lines you would like to be considered for a Board position. As soon as we have the application process figured out, we will contact you further.

Here are the comments of another collector regarding the Board of Collectors:

Very cool idea, here are some of my thoughts:

Member can be a member of only one board (so if they collect Star Wars and Halo, they can only be on one if approved)

Have a fixed amount on the board, and an odd amount so that voting is easy. Maybe 13 collectors for each board, with a pretty even mix of both loose and carded collectors and fans.

The members MUST be active in some collecting community (be it here or at another site), and have a good pulse on whats coming out, case breakdowns, arrival dates, if the item is a re-pack/rehash, etc.

The members need to "remove the passion", and by that I mean if you are a HUGE Boba fan and a case with 12 new bobas is just what you have been waiting for, it may not be what the community as a whole would like, where they would like to see 12 new figures. So you need to check your passion for a specific character or item at the door.

Here are our thoughts:

Thanks so much!

This is just the kind of input we need. We have begun to have collectors e-mail us with interest in becoming members of the Board of Collectors. We encourage folks who are interested to send us a note and get on the list, but we are going to figure our all the particulars of the program before we make final decisions.

You are correct that Board members will be voting on issues and having an odd number on each board is a good idea. We also like the idea of having a set number for each board. It makes the program more meaningful. Of course each board will eventually have a chairperson to administer the board. The folks on each board won't be just there for show, there will be real stuff to do.

Thanks for the input.

Thanks for your interest in THE COLLECTORATE.

The Weekly Update That Will Appear On Sandtroopers.com today or Tuesday...

Continuing our series on site features as each is created:

Dynamic Abbreviations

There are a lot of abbreviations associated with Star Wars collecting. Heck, any collecting for that matter. The abbreviations that collectors encounter can be a challenge if you don't know what they mean. There are not a lot of sources to help learn them. In most cases, if an explanation of the abbreviations exists on a site it can be hard to find and the list is not right with you when you see an abbreviation you don't know. MOC, MISB, ARC, ODST? These abbreviations in the product listing can be real important in choosing what you want and getting the right item.

THE COLLECTORATE website will feature what we’ll call Dynamic Abbreviations. While you are visiting our website there will be a small box in the same place on every page that will provide you with definitions to common collecting abbreviations. But it gets better! This system is smart. It checks to see what you are looking at and gives you definitions that are relevant to each page.

If you are looking at the listing for a Star Wars ARC Trooper, it will include what ARC stands for. If you are looking at a Halo ODST Figure, it will include what ODST stands for. But it will also tell you that MOC means Mint On Card

Thanks for your interest in THE COLLECTORATE.

Hello all,

We are still alive and well. More medical problems with my mother have slowed our progress, but we are making progress.

We have tested and tested our inventory system and the upload to the site. It looks like all the bugs are gone and late this week the first 4,000 real items will be uploaded. As soon as they are up we will begin uploading pics.

We are not going anywhere. We just want to make sure we are ready when we open.

I also need your help on another topic. One of our distributors called me today because they know we talk to a lot of collectors through forums. This distributor is asking for our feedback on their Exclusive Joker Squad set.

Here is a chance to get your input directly to the big wigs...

Have you bought the Joker Squad set?
If not, are you planning to buy it?
If you have it, what do you like?
What don't you like?

Let us know what you think.

Thanks and keep the faith, we are going to open. You will hear about it first right here.

One area that we really have not discussed on the forms much is cases or sets of figures and how we will sell them on our site. Here are my thoughts on the topic.

1. When I hear the word "case" it makes be think of a wave case box of figures just as it comes from the factory. The problem with selling "cases" is that so many of the wave cases contain duplicates of some figures. I would think most collectors just want one of each different figure.

2. When I hear the word "set" it makes me think of "one of each figure." My thought is that we would sell "sets" not "cases."

3. When I research the pricing for "cases" or "sets" that other retail online stores charge, many times the "per figure" price is more if you buy the set than if you bought them as individuals. That just isn't right! There should be a discount for buying the case or set because you are buying more. I really feel strongly that there should be this incentive of a lower "per figure" price if you buy a "set."

4. Selling by the "set" allows us to pick figures out of cases based upon quality. In other words we could offer a complete set all with a shield rating of 4.5 and a much lower price for a complete set all with a shield rating of say 2.0. That way if you want the high quality 4.5 packaging, you can have a benefit for buying the whole set. And if you just want to open them and don't care about the packaging, you can still get the benefit of buying the whole set.

Do you agree? What are your ideas?

Thanks,

Hugh & Dustin

Hugh,
We have merged a couple of topics to have 3 pages of input on the set, and we have featured this in our guides. I think it was met with mixed opinions to be honest.

http://www.sandtroopers.com/smf/index.php?topic=11137.msg202313#msg202313

There will be problems with selling a "set" because there will always be Clones, Jawas, Troopers, Officers or any other kind of builder you can think of, maybe you can plan to address that too. Will you offer a bonus for buying more Troops since you are buying more?

As far as packages are concerned, I think most will handle a ding or spider-crease here and there. What has to be the prime focus is cost per figure. I saw a report yesterday that Hasbro lost last quarter, even though Star Wars sales were high. The price issue has to be addressed, as they shouldn't be trying to charge more, but LESS in high hopes to keep people around for the long haul. Instead we hear about how high fuel is coupled with more bulls**t reasons the price of a basic figure is close to 8 bucks retail. That really puts a cramp on online retailers I'm sure.
There will come a time when your training ends. There will come a day when you have learned all the lessons, when all my knowledge of the dark side will be yours. On that day you will challenge me for the title of Master, and only one of us will survive the encounter.

What if there was a standard discount based upon the number of figures purchased together. Let's say for example if you bought 5 the total was reduced by a percentage or dollar amount. There could be a scale with incentives at 5, 8, 12 figures or whatever. That way you get rewarded the more you buy, but you can mix and match any figures you wanted same wave or not.

In preparation for announcing our opening date, we are about to select the members of our first Star Wars Board of Collectors.

If you think you have what it takes to be a board member it is not too late to fill out an application, but you better hurry and get it in.

Go to our splash site at www.THECOLLECTORATE.com and click on the "Board of Collectors" link and fill out and submit a board application this week.
