The News / The Science of Star Wars Episode 4 takes Flight!
« Last post by Darth Spice on Today at 10:43:36 AM »
Lucasfilm and Disney have released the fourth episode of Science and Star Wars, the popular digital series that answers how close real-world science has come to our favorite Star Wars technology. Today's episode explores Hover Vehicle Technology.  The team is joined by Diana Williams of Lucasfilm Story Group -- one of the four people responsible for determining all Star Wars canon -- to help construct (and test drive) an actual human-sized land speeder made out of plywood, cardboard and leaf blowers.

With modern science, there are two major ways engineers can replicate 'speeders' from the Star Wars films and pop culture: 1) through the use of compressed air to "hover" hardware; and 2) the use of repellent magnetic forces to levitate objects for a faster, smoother ride. Both are discussed by experts in their respective fields, including USC professor of aeronautical engineering David Barnhart and magnetoelectronics expert Kevin Roche.  Over the course of the next six episodes, Science and Star Wars will continue to explore science fantasy, science fact, and the gray area in between, Tuesdays on the official Star Wars Facebook page.  Click below for the fourth episode!

2014 Black Series / 2017 Hasbro Hascon Exclusive Black Series Captian Rex
« Last post by dj121 on October 15, 2017, 09:13:40 PM »
Does anyone else here have the Black Series Captain Rex? I have to admit when the line launched, I passed on Darth Maul. Made a commitment that I was only going to stick to OT figures. I broke the rule a few times. Qui-Gon, ROTS Obi-Wan and eventually a KO Maul. I recently added Rex, and I must say he is a FANTASTIC figure! Awesome packaging (If you didn't get a melted tray) and just an incredible sculpt overall. I was lucky enough to get an order in when the Hascon Exclusive items went live on Hasbrotoyshop. I do not regret buying this figure at all. He's very easy and fun to pose, holding pretty much any position I have put him in so far.

Rex features a removable helmet, swivel range finder, soft goods kama, a DC-15A blaster, DC-15A Riffle and his iconic pair of DC-15s pistols. His shoulder pauldron has been glued in place. The paint and decco on Rex are top notch. some of the best we've seen tvia o date on a Black Series figure. Soft goods can be touchy on Black Series figures. TLJ Luke comes to mind with a cloak that is very hard to work with. Spirit Obi-Wan has a purple mesh robe that barely fits and looks awkward. The Kama actually works well on Rex, and looks very nice as well.

If you were lucky enough to get your hands on Rex, let us know in the comments. What are your thoughts? Do you have a different opinion on the figure?

If you missed out on Rex via the convention or on HTS, fear not. Rex will be seeing a release in the Red and Black main line, Spring 2018. While he will not come with premium packaging or the DC-15A riffles, he will come with the set of pistols and be one of the first figures to have the new face printing technology applied. This is the only drawback, although it's minor. It would have been nice to have the new tech applied to this figure as well. The thought of buying a second Rex just for a better head leaves a lot to be desired. Then again, Hasbro did sucker me into buying the revised sculpt Leia on the 40th cardback.

I went to Target on Force Friday specifically because I had a couple gift cards. So I used them and purchased Luke's Landspeeder. I paid full retail, but it did not come completely out of pocket. A couple days later, I used some rewards certificates at Best Buy to get Rey and her speeder. Again, I paid full retail, but not all out of pocket. I don't regret buying either one and think they are fantastic vehicles.

So far, Walmart seems to be the only chain marking these down. Toys R Us, Target and Best Buy all have them at full retail.

Perhaps Walmart got some sort of special pricing on these, to allow such deep discounts only a little over a month after release. Online inventory checkers show the closest Walmart to me still has them at $45.00. If they drop them down to $20 or less, I'll drive over and maybe grab one more of each. I'd really like a second Rey so that I can swap some parts around and have an unmasked Rey done in the soft goods.

At the same time, Walmart discounting these so early seems like a huge mistake. We're right around the corner from the Holiday season. People will be looking for things to buy as gifts for collectors. I'm sure they would have sold quite a few at full price. This can't be a good thing for the 6" vehicle line, because with these getting marked down so fast, it might send Hasbro the wrong message, putting future vehicles at risk.
