INTRODUCTION
Darth Vader is the most potent icon of the Galactic Empire's might, and his towering height and menacing gaze are the ultimate tools of intimidation. The product of the Emperor himself, Vader answers to only the highest in the Imperial command structure and is granted great leeway in the work he conducts on his
master's behalf. Once a Jedi, Darth Vader possesses absolute command over the Force, and through him it is directed to terrible and often fatal effect. As a Lord of the Sith, the dark side flows through him, and it can be channeled to kill with a single thought or to subdue his detractors, enemies and sometimes even subordinates. Feared by Rebels and Imperials alike, Darth Vader is a terrifying union of man and machine hidden beneath black robes and forbidding armor. Darth Vader commands the massive Imperial fleet and rules his forces through unquestionable terror, determined to hunt down and extinguish the Rebel Alliance.
Seeking to broaden his control over the Empire, the Emperor commissions the creation of the Death Star. The immense space station carries a superlaser weapon capable of destroying entire planets with a single beam. When Rebel Alliance spies learn of the
weapon's existence, they steal the Death Star's technical schematics from guarded Imperial vaults and transmit them to Princess Leia Organa, who stores the plans in
R2-D2's memory systems. But when Vader hears reports of the transmission, he deploys his forces to recover the stolen plans.
When Darth Vader and his Stormtroopers seize the Rebel Alliance ship, the Tantive IV, they quickly begin interrogating its crew for information on the stolen Death Star plans believed to be on board. Lord Vader moves quickly to locate the stolen plans, and has little patience in his inquisition. Vader chooses to make an example of the commander of the Tantive IV, Captain Raymus Antilles, and uses his physical might to lift Antilles off the deck of the starship, one hand gripping the
rebel's throat. Captain Antilles refuses to give up any information on the plans' whereabouts or betray the Rebel Alliance, and Vader impatiently and quite viscerally ends the interrogation.
This piece is pretty amazing! Not only does it capture a violent and pivotal scene from
"A NEW HOPE" it captures the emotion of just how powerful Darth Vader really is and how he will stop at nothing to retrieve the stolen Death Star plans.
The sculpting as with most Sideshow items is just superb. Not only did they get the physics down with weight and pose of this piece
The artists really captured the look of fear in Captain Antilles face.
I really do not like the base. I would prefer a round or even square base and not some oddly shaped base as this has. Symmetry is something I just favor in display pieces. If you are going to have an odd shape then make sure it is for a darn good reason.
On the base there is a part of the Tantive IV hall, I think Sideshow could have given us a bit more of the wall to help with the overall composition of this piece or could have just left it off of there all together. To me I feel as it is it a piece of junk laying around and it does distract some of the view on this otherwise almost perfect piece. Maybe it is to contrast with the floor so we can see Captain Antilles legs dangling there, I do not know. The round cutoff cylinder on that mess of junk or wall is attached with a pin. It is very loose or mine is at least and I had to add some tape around the pin just to make it stay upright and not roll to the side. Again, this part of the wall to me is unnecessary.
The paint job on this piece is very well done. Nice dark blacks on Darth Vader and the light contrasting colors of Captain Antilles really do look like this piece was taken right out from the movie.
The price on this piece in my opinion is a bit high. For a piece that only stands
12" tall the price of this piece could have been reduced by another $24.99 placing the price at $199.99 instead of the $224.99 price it is listed for. Heck better yet, knock it down to $149.99.
Besides the base being my only major gripe on this piece, I can overlook the price. I would say those who have it or those who want it will be most pleased with this
in their collection. It is dynamic and just a little different from other Darth Vader statues and collectables to make this piece worth having.
