INTRODUCTION
"You fought in the Clone
Wars?"
"Yes. I was once a Jedi Knight, the same as your father."
―Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi
Sideshow Collectibles came back to Obi-Wan Kenobi once again when it was time to show off their new armored body. This Obi-Wan made its public debut at SDCC where fans got a chance to see General Kenobi up close. A new thing for Sideshow as well with this version of Obi-Wan is they followed Hot Toys in their casting the heads in flesh tone plastic.
As I said this version of Obi-Wan Kenobi brings us General Kenobi from his days during the Clone Wars. Which with already having the previous Clone Wars series and the new series out this was perfect timing for the
negotiator to hit shelves. Allowing fans to have yet another chance to add an important part of maybe the best character in the Star Wars saga.
PACKAGING - 10
General Kenobi's box again follows the 30th Anniversary design which has been the standard for a while now. Sideshow continues to keep the collector in mind with the inner design of the packaging insuring that our figures are in great shape. The inside of the box has just the single display panel but does have a nice background story on this phase of Obi-Wan on the other.
SCULPT - 10
The sculpt just plain rocks folks! Again, Obi-Wan has been done just amazingly. The sculptors picked to do Obi-Wan have just nailed him over and over. The mullet was even done very well looking as goofy as it does in the movie. The hands are quite well done and the sculpting done on the armor is just fantastic. Another bit on the armor the material chosen to use on it came out better than anything else on the market. As we see more armored figures start to hit collectors will be in for a real treat.
PAINT - 10
There is paint involved with this figure of course but the skin tone on Obi-Wan was done in a flesh tone plastic. This was the first time in the Star Wars line Sideshow had tried this and it came out great! Hot Toys has done this with so many figures with varying results as has been my experience with them. Obi-Wan though came out
very nice and something I hope they continue. The rest of their paint job with the hair, eyes, lips, etc all is as good as anything they've done before.
ARTICULATION - 10
Some people are not fans of the buck but I've not had too many issues with it. This body which is brand new and designed for the armored figures by being thinner making the armor look more natural is awesome! The movement you can get out of this armored body even with the armor making it difficult is much like the Prometheus in it gives you options not available with the buck.
ACCESSORIES - 7.5 (regular) 8.0 (exclusive)
General Kenobi is light on extras which for the price of the figure really is kind of an issue. I understand there may not have been a lot of choices for this version of the character but I have to believe there was more there than what we got. As always you get the ignited and unignited Lightsabers which allow you to capture Obi-Wan during this period of the characters existence. The coolest extra is an extra forearm piece that has a holographic Captain Rex on it, but you only could have this piece if you bought the Exclusive. This helps tie in with the new Clone Wars series that is out now and how I personally have him displayed.
OUTFIT - 8.5
Sideshow's first foray into armor was nothing short of a Albert Pujols homerun. It is an exceptional job on Sideshow part to finally put out armor that feels like armor would be in the real world. Unlike the armor from Medicom which is kind of rubbery this armor is a hard plastic that gives the feel as I stated of what they might have worn. If all the armor turns out this good future figures like Stormies, Utapau Trooper, Etc will all be
rockin'!
VALUE - 8 (regular), 8.5 (exclusive)
Obi-Wan sold for $90 and that was the price for both the exclusive and regular editions. The level of the sculpt, paint job, and new armor alone make this figure worth owning. The issue though for the regular is the lack of the forearm piece which leaves you with a great figure but even lighter on the extras. If you have the
exclusive or get it at some point it is a bit better and allows you to have more possibilities. However, for the price Sideshow should have put more with this
figure.
OVERALL- 8.5
This figure just might be the best 1:6th figure from the entire Star Wars line. Yes, there are still many figures to come in this line with Vader,
Stormtroopers, Clones, etc. but right now I think this figure puts most of it together. Again, Sideshow knocked it out with how the armor came out and the new body as well, but at these prices we need more extras.
