LUKE
SKYWALKER'S X-WING FIGHTER
The Incom T-65 X-Wing has become the mainstay starfighter and symbol of Rebel defiance for much of the Galactic Civil War. This ship was made famous when a young farm boy (Luke Skywalker) blew up the first Death at the Battle of Yavin.
At 12.5 meters long, the X-Wing starfighters are equipped with sophisticated flight and combat systems, and hyperspace capability built into its narrow space frame. Aft of the cockpit, four
"S" foils serve as wing surfaces in air travel, distribute deflector shield energy, and act as weapons mounts. In space they open into an X configuration allowing the wingtip Taim & Bak KX9 laser cannons a greater targeting spread. These formidable weapons can fire laser bolts independently or simultaneously for maximum effectiveness, while two Krup MG7 proton torpedo launchers, mounted forward in the main fuselage, provide long range targeting firepower.
Four real space Incom 4L4 thrust engines provide the X-Wing with its speed and agility. Add a reputation for being able to withstand damage and it is apparent why this fighter is a favorite among Rebel Pilots. Although strictly a
single-pilot ship, a socket located behind the cockpit houses an Astromech Droid (such as
R2-D2) that serves triple duty as navigator, technician, and
co-pilot.
As we all know it was during the climactic Battle of Yavin, after the
Y-Wings of Gold Squadron had failed in their mission, that Luke Skywalker, flying in Red Five, heroically led the
X-Wings of Red Squadron in the destruction of the Empire's ultimate symbol of oppression
- the Death Star.

HISTORY
To achieve the incredible space dogfights seen at the conclusion of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, the technicians of Industrial Light and Magic built intricately detailed models which could be mounted on computer controlled model movers. Through a combination of model and/or camera moves, they were able to create spectacular imagery inspired by World War II aerial combat photography which George Lucas had used to choreograph this momentous battle.
Several hero versions of the X-wing were built, including one with a motorized mechanism that allowed the
"S" foils to open and close into attack position. Hero models were cast in resin from a master mold and assembled over internal metal armatures that allowed them to be mounted from a variety of positions while ensuring the mounting point remained hidden to the camera. Removable detailed plugs concealed the openings on the model. More simplified
"pyro" models were built to achieve the dramatic images of starfighters exploding in conflagrations of flame and debris above the Death Star.
Working from original body castings, original plastic construction kit pieces, and detailed examinations of surviving miniatures in the Lucasfilm Ltd. archive, eFX engineers and model makers constructed a new master pattern which represents the
X-wing, Red Five, flown by Luke Skywalker.
What can I say? Ever since acquiring the Master Replicas Y-Wing, Snowspeeder, and Millennium Falcon studio scale ships I have been craving for the
X-Wing to complete the main Rebel Ship line, though an A-Wing or
B-Wing would be cool to add later down the road. eFX has picked up where Master Replicas had left off and pushed the design of the X-Wing from a mere studio scale ship to a really nice model complete with Luke Skywalker and
R2-D2.
Upon receiving the package that contained the X-Wing I was overcome with joy and delight. I was as giddy as a schoolboy. I cannot thank my mother enough for purchasing this item for me, thank you mom. Ok let's say it, my mom is really cool!
After opening up the massive shipping box this ship came in I carefully assembled the ship on my kitchen table. From there after looking at the details and just sheer impressiveness of this ship I snapped over one hundred photos for this guide. Right off the bat I can tell you this mere guide cannot show you how impressive this ship is, you just have to see it in person to really admire it.
What can I say? I am very impressed with this item and can only hope with today's failing economy that eFx will continue to thrive and make more impressive ships later down the road. If you have not heard already the next ship is the Imperial TIE Interceptor. Though a neat ship I would prefer a regular TIE Fighter but eFx is going to be giving the collectors something new. Now if I can only afford such an item!
The additions of the Luke Skywalker and R2-D2 figures by Gentle Giant are a very nice and extremely cool touch. It just pushes the item farther up the curve. When the ship it plugged in and turned on R2's eye glows as does the ships interior and engines.
Anyways the Red Five ship is very impressive and if you can I would say go out there and pick one up for yourself, you will be glad you did.
