J: Hasbro
usually can't go wrong by doing what makes sense and
releasing a warranted female figure. In the same paradigm
as Oola, Aurra Sing, and old Aunt Beru, you get Barriss.
Obscure? You bet! Padawan to Luminara, who was at least
already made, being dropped on us by the barrelful back
on 4-23-2002. Now a figure with instant demand comes a
year later, and, more importantly, improves over any weak
areas that you could find in the Luminara figure.

- Demand yes J, where was this figure when I
was standing in line at Celebration 2? I remember
seeing Mary Oyaya at Celebration, wishing I had a
figure for her to sign, the 8x10s looked
really cool. The crew at Hasbro has thrown in
another Jedi to help us with your Geonosis play
set dioramas. Barriss Offee has landed in the
Sandwatch arena for inspection. I really like the
idea of giving these figures stands, which was
the first thing that grabbed my attention. Very
much like her Master Luminara, Barriss seems to
be stuck in one or two positions. There is
limited articulation and it is hard to position
without the included base. The high heel will get
you every time. |

The only big headache with this one, like you
said Spice, is finding those two cool poses that
it was designed to be placed in, keeping the arm
articulation from looking dizzy at the joints.
The battle pose is what gives this one its slick
presentation - the stance and arched back make it
believable. And the stand? Great, I'll take it!
Throw in some more plastic with every purchase,
and as long as it's not pouring down the sprue of
a five year old part used in some toy they made
for POTF2 (like more snowtrooper cannons and
giant mouse droids) then you're talking value
added. The fact that I can stick the figure on
there and that some detail was put in with the
embedded battle droid half buried in the sand
gives me hope to expect some cool stuff in this
line in the second half of '03. |

- I like the idea of the magnet in the hand
too, but it just looks like she has a fifty-cent
piece stuck to her palm. There is no way to paint
it black too? Again we receive the Shaak Ti
blaster effect, this is a major deal with Hasbro
I think they feel they are really doing us a
favor by giving us these. I know it isnt
the mouse droid we are all sick of seeing but I
suppose it is better than nothing. I also
mentioned the base previously, now it would be
really cool if they could match up the colors on
Barriss and Aayla. I put the two together and it
looked stupid with the dark and light colored
rocks. Maybe its me that has it wrong and
the two do not belong together. |

Definitely Spice, cuffs and collars don't match
if you catch my drift. We're forced to set Aayla
and Barriss at opposite ends of the Arena this
time out I guess. Maybe Hasbro will re-issue the
Arena playset with some sort of plastic mat to
throw all the figures on - at this point anything
is possible. Good offering here though with
Barriss. A little stiff, but lots of energy and
dynamics for a statue with another blast effect. |

FINAL
THOUGHTS:
 |
Jason
- Did we need Barriss before getting
Wat Tambor? Maybe. Still gets a thumbs up.
|
 |
Spice
- It is still a stunning likeness of the
character; while they screw up simple
articulation you still get a great looking
figure. Agreed J, there is nothing wrong with not
making another resculpt. Ill take something
with two good looks versus something I already
own. The idea of a chick with green tattoos on
her face is kind of freaky too. I really hope
they do continue with this newer add-on feature
for the Saga line. It makes for a more
interesting overall product. I hear the diorama
from Hasbro in Conventions this year will be
second to none. Ill stay on target here
though and give Luminara Undulis Padawan a thumbs
up. |
