This figure begins the 2003 series of figures

Spice: The new crop of figures is beginning to filter in nationwide for Star Wars collectors across America. Obi-Wan kicks off the new series with the same things that I personally hated about the last 50 plus that Hasbro released in 2002. Sure the likeness is there, however to be perpetually echoing the same sentiment: Give us something else, please! There is not a need to make the same character over and over again. Padme in the different attire maybe, but certainly not Obi-Wan Kenobi.

This is simply unnecessary and a blatant attempt to siphon more money off of hard working collectors wallets. No, wait, this one has spear stabbing action. That certainly must be the reason why there was such a need for this. I remember Obi twirling the saber about in a spinning fashion to do the beast in, should they make Obi-Wan Acklay Battle II? With spinning wrist killing action? Give me a break, and what really burns me up is they make good figures like Lama Su and Wat-Tambor. So it is not like they do not know what to do here! They know what collectors want; I just wonder whether I am all alone on this one. My campaign to end this nonsense of resculpting every figure 25 times over.

The only thing I really like about this figure is the spear. At least they made it with break apart action, one less thing to package with Obi Acklay II! Really they could have slapped this spear in one of the upcoming Target Accessory Packs and called it a day, I couldn't believe it when I saw this figure three months ago. This is the way they begin the new set of figures? I also noticed the cost saving measures they put into the new universal packaging. I hope they can use some of the saved money to reinvest in the way they ship their product. If you talk to Hasbro they will tell you that they are geared toward children, not to collectors. I find that to be hilarious as well, do you really think these would sell at the rate they do without the collector? At all even? It is just a shame to see them cop out for doing a shoddy job of shipping and handling. Something you pay for in every purchase.

There is another reason that they do a resculpt. In case a new collector missed a figure. I doubt one would have a hard time finding Obi-Wan Kenobi Coruscant Chase. So that excuse doesn't apply here. Hasbro has been doing this since the Red Cards, and if you feel you do not need the figures again such as myself, don't buy them. Let the guys who missed them pick them up! I still believe these are cases sent back at the end of last year and they simply repackaged them instead of completely destroying them. I have no fact to base this on; it is mere speculation on my part. I am getting my info by guessing from the amount of cases that collected dust at my local Toys 'R'Us. They still have 'Power of the Jedi' Teebo and Eeth Koth for those of us who were unfortunate and missed out!

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Spice - So if you haven't figured it out already, I give this figure a thumb down. As much as I hate to start out the New Year being negative about the hobby I love. I cannot deny common sense and say we truly needed this installment in our respective collections.

+ you finally got that spear to complete the Acklay battle!
- the spear fits on Obi Coruscant chase just fine, proving you really didn't need it
- other than the spear there is nothing here you really needed in your collection
