Spice: The first wave of 2008 would come up short in a very obvious way on a couple of figures. We start with the Surgical Droid 2-1B from Revenge of the Sith. As if you just couldn't use your Power of the Jedi 2-1B figure, the good people at Hasbro would come correct on a more articulate up-to-date version of our favorite robotic sawbones. The artwork on the package shows off 2-1B like never before. The details on the right hand and the hydraulic oil splashed up on the chest, it appears they captured him at his best in this photo. If you were to stare at this too long, your expectations of the figure could be much, much higher!

After you get the package open is when it all starts to get a little weird. We all know the economy isn't quite what is was in years past but did we have to start skimping on the plastic that is put into the action figures? At first I thought it was limited to the character but after comparing him to a Kashyyyk Trooper, they lined up about the same height. It was good to see the needle apparatus on the left arm, after a few seconds of chapter 46 from Revenge of the Sith you can easily see it's on the left arm. It's good to know they only screwed it up on the package!

I haven't seen Padme, anyone for that matter! Click thumbnail for large image
The thing that I did really like vs. other versions of this droid, they sure loaded it up with plenty of articulation and movement. I can't really say why you'd need to move 2-1B so many different ways but it is nice they loaded up the elbows, knees, ankles and shoulders with tons of movement. The wires I can see being worn or breaking with age, but they did seem to give you enough play on the line from the face to the chest. The paintjob wasn't anything special, as I mentioned before the package will have you craving for a little bit more and if they did fall short anywhere it'd be on the paintjob.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
Spice - I really hate to see Hasbro shorting the collector on material while raising their prices. I really do believe the Star Wars collector deserves the best every time out, and even though 2-1B is a bit short, they did enough to warrant a version for Revenge of the Sith. It's just too bad someone didn't put him up to the deluxe operating table from Revenge of the Sith as shown below!

+   I love the articulation everywhere!
-   Can we get some sort of accessory? They managed this in other versions.
+    They changed enough to reissue a new sculpt.
