KICKIN' IT UP IN THE NORTH WOODS
Holy smokes has this been a very memorable event. It
all started at 10:30pm on April 1st when I swung by to get my
sidekick Zargon for the midnight madness extravaganza at our local
Wal-Mart. Little did I know is that my sidekick had put the better
part of a 30-pack of Classic Beer away over the course of the
evening and was very disgruntled over events that took place over
the course of the night. Zargon ended up staying home ready to brawl
while I grabbed his cousin and said "Lets bail!" I was okay with this
arrangement because I knew this guy hadn’t been drinking.
We arrived at Wal-Mart at 11:30pm to find an almost empty parking
lot, and that didn’t really surprise me because I didn’t think there
were many hardcore Star Wars collectors in the north woods anyways.
We went into the store and headed for the toy section just to get a
feel for the layout and to scope things out. They had four center
aisle pallets all wrapped up in black plastic as we approached the
main aisle with all the figures that was also completely covered
with black plastic. We still had twenty-five minutes before the big
unveiling so we hung out and got to talking to some people that were
already there before us. I met a guy that recently moved here from
Mexico that was really into collecting, so we talked for a while and
it turns out his girlfriend runs a Star wars site down in Mexico. I
thought that was pretty cool. I met a few other local collectors as
well. By the time they finally stripped the plastic that was
covering all them brand new figures there were about twenty people ready
to dig in, like it was thanksgiving dinner. There was a 9-year-old boy that got his mom to bring him out for the big event, and he
was loading that cart up good. I also witnessed a 65-year-old
grandma standing off to the side holding a stack of figures for
somebody. The age range of the people that showed up just blew me
away.
I ended up leaving with pretty much what I wanted that early morning
and I’m glad they had plenty of figures and goods to go around. All
and all, aside from the Zargon episode it was a very pleasant and
memorable experience that will probably never happen again to this
extent. I’m glad I lived it!
