SANDTROOPERS INVADE THE EXPO
It was a crisp Saturday morning in the middle of September, and it
was the second day of the
Chicagoland Entertainment Expo. I saddled up my Dewback and
headed out to the Wyndham Hotel in Itasca, IL. It took me only
about thirty minutes to get there, and it was a nice drive since
there wasn’t any traffic on the roads. I was very much looking
forward to this day, and couldn’t wait for it to start with the
charity breakfast at 7:30.
So, I arrived at
the hotel around 7:00, and only about ten minutes later it was Darth
Spice and Sandtrooper Dan walking toward the hotel in the parking
lot. And, for the very first time, I was able to get a really quick
sneak peek of Dan’s
Coruscant
Outlander Club diorama, which was sitting in the back of his
van. I barely got a look at it, but for the short amount of time I
saw it I knew it was going to look sweet as hell at our table in the
expo.
We all went into
the hotel, grabbed ourselves some seats, and the breakfast began.
The food was just as good this year as it was last year, and there
were great prizes that were given away during the breakfast. I was
lucky enough to have won an autographed Luminara Unduli figure,
signed by the actress who played that role, Mary Oyaya. This was
one hell of a way to start the day!
Once
the breakfast ended, it was time to start setting up our table, so
that Sandtroopers.com was yet another presence not to be reckoned
with. We took out the banner, put the flyers on the table, and got
ourselves ready for the big day ahead of us. As I mentioned before,
Dan brought his Outlander Club diorama, and we got working on that
since there were well more than probably fifty customized figures
(thanks to Y-WingJager in the forums). I wasn’t able to attend
Celebration III, so this was truly an honor to witness such a
great diorama in person. I brought twenty-eight of my custom clone
troopers and clone commanders, put them in the action figure display
case that we had gotten from
Wholesalecases.com, and we were ready for the show to begin.
There
were hundreds of people that showed up throughout the day, and there
were lots of different things to do. Of course there was the
breakfast that had taken place, there were many different vendors
(selling trading cards, toys, books and other collectibles),
actors/actresses selling autographs, and several people who were
dressed up in costumes (there was even a costume contest with
prizes).
The one part of the
day that I liked quite a bit was the Q&A session with Daniel Logan
(young Boba Fett from AOTC), Paul Blake (Greedo from ANH), Kenny
Baker (R2-D2) and Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca). Several questions were
asked regarding the future of possible Star Wars films and the two
television shows, but none of them were allowed to speak about it.
However, it did sound like there is a slight chance that an older
Boba Fett could appear in the live action television show, and when
I heard that all I could hope was that the show would be entirely
about Boba Fett (since he’s one of my favorite Star Wars
characters).
Just
when I thought the day was going great it got even better! Spice
handed me a big cardboard box that was sitting behind our table, and
he said it was something that I needed to open. I opened up the
box, and in it was stormtrooper armor (unassembled). There was also
a note in there, and it basically said that it was an anniversary
gift from my wife since we’ll be celebrating our five-year wedding
anniversary in October. This was quite a surprise for me, and I
just wish my wife could have been there to see my reaction in person
after opening up the box.
There was going to
be a charity dinner later in the evening, but I wasn’t able to stick
around for it so I loaded up the Dewback and headed back home. I
had a great time, bought some cool stuff, got my very own
stormtrooper armor, and met some very cool people along the way.
