THIS WAS ONE OF
THE BEST SHOWS YET!
My Son and I saddled up the Dewback Cruiser Friday afternoon and
left the North woods of Wisconsin for Darth Spice’s house. We rolled
into his city about 9:15pm and that is when the festivities began!
We hung out talking about what the game plan for the weekend would
be for the show until 2 am, then we crashed knowing our big day is
going to begin in three and a half hours. No sooner did I close my
eyes and I had Darth Spice telling me it was time to get up. With
head slightly pounding yet from the beers I had five hours earlier,
I was highly motivated to get the day going.
We got the Dewbacks loaded up and
headed out for our breakfast with the stars which was a perfect
start to the day. My son picked a great table with some great
company to share breakfast with. At our table we had Doug Wangler
who was the model for the Jedi character Quinlan Vos in Dark Horses
Star Wars Republic comic book, issue 77. Also at our table was
Lawrence Makoare who played the Witch King, the first Ur-i-kai, and
the Orc General in Lord of the Rings Return of the King. My son was
flippin’ when I told him who that guy sitting right across from him
was. We also had the very pretty Star Wars artist Cynthia Cummens,
and of course the infamous dustrho. I’d say that was a pretty cool
line up to share breakfast with! Over my left shoulder at the next
table sat Jaws from the James Bond movies, and off to the left in
front of us at the next table sat Lois Lane from the original
Superman TV series back in the day.
After
breakfast we proceeded to set up our tables for the show. I enlisted
the help of dustrho to help me get the Outlander Club set up and he
was happy to oblige. It’s always fun to set this beast and to create
with the figures any situations you want. There’s plenty of room
inside and out and plenty of options of what you want to set up, I’m
glad dustrho got to experience that first hand. After we set the
diorama up we set our custom figures up for display. Dustrho brought
a very nice assortment of many different flavored Clones to appeal
to the masses, and appeal they did, he got loads of compliments. My
favorites were the swamp Troopers, outstanding! My boxed sets of
custom Clones fared very well in the compliment department also.
The
comments we heard most were WOW!, are they for sale, and how much do
you want for them. I think we might be on to something here dustrho!
Last thing we had to do was hang the very cool Sandtrooper banner
Spice had made up for the show. By! this time a nice line was
starting to form of people waiting for the show to open with a few
kids even sneaking over to get a look what was happening at the
Sandtrooper table. We were now ready to dazzle some eyes with our
creations and the creations of David Marks (aka Y-WingYager) custom
figures populating the inside of the Outlander Club. Dave I must
have said your name a hundred times when people were asking
questions about the diorama. Everybody loved the diversity in all
your customs a lot, and some people were even trying to guess what
figures you used to make certain customs.
Saturdays show in my eyes was a total success and I’m really happy I
attended this show with my son. Many people got to see my work on
display and I hope it inspires others to build and create things
with there own hands that Hasbro could never deliver, quality play
sets and outstanding paint jobs on figures.
Later in the evening came the dinner with the stars. This time at
our table there was only one star, our very own Scalperhunter1 (Ron
Lanning) and his wife. We talked all through dinner and learned some
of the background stories of each other. It was a very nice meal
with some kind folks from Iowa. Earlier in the day Doug Wangler
(Quinlan Vos) made a comment to me how he loved my custom figures
and he he wished he could buy some for his son to display in his
bedroom. So at dinner I presented my Commander Bly set of four to
him for his son to have in return all I asked was for him to sign my
shirt, he was just shocked with the offer and couldn’t thank me
enough, and I got my shirt signed no problem. Everybody was happy!
Daniel Logan (Episode II Boba Fett) was sitting at the table right
behind my son and them two talked all through dinner.
After
dinner is when the real party started! We hung out until 3:30am in
the lobby of the Hotel with Ray Park, Mary Oyaya (Luminara), Doug
Wangler (QuinLan Vos), Lawrence Makoare (LOTR), Daniel Logan, and
Ari Lehman from the original Friday the 13th movie. We partied and
got to know each other and my son got to ask loads of questions of
things he was curious about. I mentioned that my Sons birthday was
Sunday, so at midnight they gave my boy a special birthday tribute
in one of the conference rooms. Ari Lehman played piano and we all
sang giving my son a birthday he’ll never forget. Those were his own
words. It was such a great time!
In conclusion, it was great to meet
up with everybody and to finally meet some new faces from the Forum
and like I said before... This was one of the best shows yet, and I
was glad to be a part of it. Most of the pictures were taken with my
DV camera and because of the poor lighting I shot the footage in
infrared just to be able to see anything. So the pictures are in
black and white.
