DAY 3: SIDESHOW COLLECTIBLES PRESENTATION
The Sideshow panel was quite an afternoon highlight at Celebration IV. While they really didn’t drop any further bombshells as far as new releases are concerned, we did get quite an in-depth look at the process ranging from packaging, photography, and design. It was pretty interesting to see what kind of process goes into designing a one-quarter scale premium format Biker Scout. They also covered the production aspects for the 12-inch Jabba the Hutt. It was very informative and it was something the other companies really didn’t cover in their panels.

We did get a look at the new 12-inch Obi-Wan Kenobi (ANH) that will be available for pre-order very soon. The Holographic Darth Sidious with Mechno chair will also be great compliment to the Darth Maul most already have in hand. They also gave us a little light on the first 12 inch 2-pack, and the Snow Bunny Padme that is in production stages.

The team also covered the new dioramas that will be a staple in the line. The behind the scenes look at Anakin VS Obi-Wan was enough to have me rethinking my decision not to purchase. However I’m pretty certain most of us Troopers will be looking forward to the next idea they are exploring in the form of the Tatooine Sandtrooper search for the droids.

The Q & A session that followed provided a chance for collectors to express some of their concerns and they are addressing many issues concerning packaging, armored Troopers and army builders. We even learned new words like mango-technology that they are planning to use in the new 30th packages. I was forced to ask a question regarding their concern for price points and keeping these items spaced far enough apart for people to afford them. They did say it was a concern but they still plan on charging 6k a piece for the life-size droids. I’m not sure if a life-size Threepio and R2 are worth that kind of money but if it’s one thing I’ve learned, if they build it, we will buy it! Overall I think Sideshow collectibles will continue to be a strong force among Star Wars collectors. Are some of the pieces very expensive? Absolutely. However you can’t argue the impressive commitment to quality and detail they continue to strive and build upon.
